That is why I added the "take it with a grain of salt".

This isn't an actual source telling anyone we're making a change.

But it IS someone with reputable clout commenting on whether or not the Pels make a change THIS off-season.

And that's the first time I've seen it publicly mentioned. Maybe if enough people repeat it, it'll get spoken into the universe and happen.

Again here is Woj’s tweet:

quote:

Executive VP David Griffin and Pelicans ownership have a decision to make with a year left on Gentry's contract, sources said. Consider two relationships Griffin has back to his front-office days in Cleveland and Phoenix, respectively, if there's a change in New Orleans: LA Clippers assistant Ty Lue and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd, sources said.

Read if carefully. He never said they are candidates. He says “sources say” that they “could be candidates based on past history.”

Pure speculation and the “source” is most likely Lue and Kidd’s agents.

Woj is well known for doing this. It’s how he gets legitimate breaking news. From agents.

Pels either need to make a change now or go all in with Gentry. You only got so many years on Zion's rookie deal, changing coaches in the middle of it doesn't bode well fo your chances at keeping him. Rip the bandaid off now and give him a good 3 years with a quality coach whose first response to a 40 point loss isn't well the other team shot well

Yet your title represents it as fact.

The article simply takes Wojs quote and twists it into something it’s not.

This article is false.

It’s sourced from an article Woj himself wrote.

The original article’s quote:

This isn’t him speculating, this is him hearing these names. The source you can speculate but given his closeness with Griffin I doubt he is having to do much bone throwing to get insights into our inner circle. Since he already has both feet firmly planted inside it.

It is speculating. Read the words again.

It is a “source” speculating based on past relationships. Not saying they ARE actual candidates.

Trust me. Read the words again.

The “source” is likely agents.

Jason Kidd would be a great mentor for lonzo and NAW, but he isnt a head coach

Lue is not the guy either. If yall thought our offensive sets were bad now, Lue makes Al look like Phil Jackson.

In the end, I may not agree with whoever our next coach will be, but I'm not a GM. I trust they'll make the decision that's best for the team and I'll be here supporting the Pels regardless.

I can read just fine. It’s a snippet about the future after next season for the Pels and Gentry, where Woj, in writing to his audience, is saying:

“Consider two relationships Griffin has back to his front-office days in Cleveland and Phoenix, respectively, if there's a change in New Orleans: LA Clippers assistant Ty Lue and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd, sources said.”

You can speculate those are agents feeding him, and that’s fine, but we don’t have anything that verifies that is the case any more than those sources possibly being people inside the organization. Which we know Woj has a lot of, so to me it makes little sense to be peddling rumors of agents when you already have the big fish’s of that given organization on your speed dial. Especially if doing so risks upsetting that established relationship.

However I firmly believe based on everything I’ve seen of Griffin in this new era of his career that he won’t just limit himself to his comfort zone of past hires or retreads. He’ll have to prove me wrong on his decision making on that front but he’s done that a lot elsewhere so I have some confidence.

That’s what that tweet was.

Alternatively, this was Griffin doing a favor to Lue and Kidd by getting their names out there, all while definitely not considering them.

I see zero reason for Griffin to put out the real info on who he is considering -- why would he want to get interest up and get into a bidding war? Anything that he pushes out is likely a smokescreen and, again, throwing a bone to old friends who might be able to do him favors later on.

I will say, though, that does mean that Gentry is likely done. There's no reason for Griffin to put it out otherwise.

This is Griffin telling agents "Don't let your clients take crummier jobs for next season without talking to me."

ETA: I don't object to Lue at all.

My thoughts as well. I don't see Woj even "throwing a bone" without legitimate knowledge that we are considering making a move.

Lue rode LeBron's coattails and it is starting to look like Griffin did the same thing.

That’s cool and all but this isn’t “news”. Read the tweet, again.

It is well documented that Woj will write tweets like this based on agent information to throw them a bone. There are multiple articles written on this very phenomenon. Jeff Bower, for one, HATE Woj when he was the Pels GM and wouldn’t give him any info and didn’t want to work with agents that fed him info.

It may turn out to be true. But this is speculation at best based on connections.

We aren’t going to hire Lue or Kidd.

Well they are both shitty coaches so that’s a start.

Griffin has also made multiple comments about his time in Cleveland, and why they weren’t more successful, why he ultimately failed and disliked his time there. He puts a lot of blame on infrastructure and the coaching staff. Here’s just one of many:

quote:

There were a lot of things we didn’t do in terms of infrastructure, there were a lot of things we didn’t do in terms of culture within the staff,” Griffin says. “I know why we didn’t win championships, so it’s hard for me.”

Beyond that, Kidd is has proven to be a poor head coach. His teams have dramatically improved after his firing. He also has multiple arrests including for domestic abuse, and people kind of forgot about that until he got hired by the Lakers. There was a good bit of hoopla about it at that time.

I think Griffin will make a better hire than that.
