25+. I'm sure he'll start about 30 games too depending on injuries. Right now I think he's our 7th best player, after Bey, and before Jones and Missi. It's a necessary pickup. He can shoot, which we needed desperately. Hopefully this pushes Poole and we get something out of

His shooting is desperately needed. His percentage was down last yr but I expect him to be back around 35/36%.

Bey has been putting in work this off-season. I expect big things out of him next yr.

Wow!! This is big for us.

Makes the upcoming season a little more interesting.

I just want a full season without injuries and finally see what this team can do. If we suck, ok fine. If we dont, awesome!! So tired of what ifs

yea I’m with you on that. He’s decent but not near as good as BI was and I was glad we traded him. Pelicans need someone who can close out games. We don’t have that on the roster

You expect Zion/ Trey to step into this role or they are gone. Fears can be that guy. Healthy Murray makes a difference there.

We are highly underestimating Bey/ Mathurin on good nights IMO. Both those dudes can pop off for 25-30pts.

Zion has had 7 years to do this, and the hasn't. Move on.

Trey isn't that kind of player, so expecting him to close games on his own is just silly. Can he knock down a 3 in the clutch? Sure. Is he going to take his man off the dribble to create that 3? absolutely not.

Murray is capable of closing games. Hopefully Fears turns into that guy, and he has the skill set to do so. Hell DQ has a better skill set to close games out than Zion or Trey does.

I don't have expectations for them to succeed in the role but that would be great. They are indeed expected to step into this role whether they fail or not.

The whole point of this season is to see if either can become a cornerstone piece to pair with Fears/ Queen for if Fears/ Queen becomes your new starting point.

We are a very good team if either of those guys step up and develop closer to their max potential.

No. They aren't.
Again, Zion has proven he can't.
Trey is a role player, and that role isn't to create for himself as that kind of scorer, and that's ok. He's elite at what he does in his role, and every successful team has elite role players.

Trey fits with any lineup.
Zion fits with a very very specific type of lineup, one that we are no where close to having.

They are both pretty much maxed out. Trey is b/c he plays at the top of his potential, which is an elite 3 point shooter who can still score when run off the line. Zion is maxed out b/c he's lazy and has no interest in developing anything else to his game.
Expecting either of them to do something new this year that puts them into another level is silly.

I get what you are saying but your opinion is solely based off past seasons and history. Both guys are 26 y/o and starting their prime.

Saying they are both maxed out is nothing more than an opinion and a ridiculous one considering their age and ceiling.

Trey has not developed a full game and can't create his own shot yet. He could easily do more.

Zion only drives to the goal and still struggles with his handles while doing so. If he cleans that up he's already better. If he develops any type of shot then watch out.

Those are things that both are capable of regardless if they have done it up to this point.

And yes, our 2 best scorers/ players are expected to close out games. Whether you choose to deny that simply because you don't like it or cant imagine it is a you problem.

As opposed to basing it off wishes and prayers? We know what Zion is. You're acting like it's Zion going into his third year. He's a veteran at this point regardless of his age.

I'm a fan of the Mathurin signing and it gives a little excitement going into the season but I can't for the life see how a Pels fan could watch Zions career and think he has some extra gear just waiting to be revealed in year 8.

I'm acting like we already had this huge argument over BI shooting more 3's and I was correct.

You saw glimpses. It faded. No one thought it would happen. It did.

You're argument is that Trey/ Zion won't do more and that's fine.

The reality is that they CAN do more and should be doing more. If not now then maybe never, and that's what we will find out this season.

The coaches expect the same thing otherwise we would have already traded both/ either.

The capabilities are there. We haven't seen it. We should expect to see the best version of these guys or they are gone.

I'm not saying they will do it. They are expected to do it.

No one wanted to accept BI would shoot more 3's, but the team expected it and he did.

I haven't said anything about Trey.

My argument is that we've said this for 7 years and I stopped saying it years ago. I realized that it actually is never. Zion is an ok player, that's it. We've seen what Zion can do, he's not developing his game in year 8 to something that we haven't seen before.

'm not saying they will do it. They are expected to do it.

Coaches expect players to do more than they are doing is not something new nor what I am even talking about. You don't think any f Zion's previous 3 head coaches ever expectd hi to do more? Jamahl is the first head coach Zion has had that has expected him to do more? He is what he is.

He's 26. If he could create his own shot, he would have been doing it in college. I don't get how some of you can think someone can just add a skillset they've never had in their life before. Thinking Trey has a chance to become that type of scorer is like thinking Herb can work hard enough to be able to shoot 3's off of screens like Klay Thompson. There are certain things you can either do or you can't do b/c of your skillset, body, athleticism and/or BBIQ. Learning how to be a better shooter, when you're already a good shooter, is attainable. He can work on getting his shot off quicker off screens going left, and going right. He can work on getting his feet set and shoulders squared quicker to get that shot off quicker and still maintain a high percentage. He can work on hitting a floater when run off the line. If you don't know how to finish at the rim by the time your 26 and been in the league for 5 years, you aren't going to magically learn how to get better at it. And I think Trey finishes at the rim just fine, just pointing out that finishing at the rim is something you'd be good at when your 20, as well as 26. Yes you can improve your decision making to increase your FG% as you adjust to the faster and bigger nba game, something i hope to see from Fears this year at the rim, but you either have the athleticism, length and/or creativity to finish at the rim in the NBA or you don't. You don't develop that as a new skill set if you weren't even doing it in college. And Trey's ability to get to the rim and finish is completely different than Fears ability to get to the rim and finish. Trey isn't taking guys off the dribble to the rim very often. He uses his elite 3 point shooting to get guys to close out on him and blow by them. Fears on the other hand has the quickness and ball handling to get by any defender from any situation, hence the create his own shot skillset. Trey finishes at the the rim at a higher% than Fears, but that doesn't equate to them having the same skillset and Trey being better at it, even though i'm talking about finishing at the rim for both of them. How they get there is different. Trey is great at what he does, but it's different from what a guy like Fears can do.

quote:

Zion only drives to the goal and still struggles with his handles while doing so. If he cleans that up he's already better. If he develops any type of shot then watch out.

It's been 7 years. I don't care about him anymore. And he can't shoot. plain and simple. He looks like he just came from working out when he shoots. It's such a stiff and ugly looking shot. You'd think he could improve his handle, but that would require actually putting in the work in the offseason on that, which he's yet to do in 7 years.

quote:

And yes, our 2 best scorers/ players are expected to close out games. Whether you choose to deny that simply because you don't like it or cant imagine it is a you problem.

And you thinking they are magically going to be able to when they've proven that's not part of their nba arsenal is a you problem. When you say close out games, i hope you are referring to actually having the ball in their hands with under a minute left and needing to get a basket, whether we are winning or losing at that time, and not simply talking about being on the court "closing" out the game.
Brunson is a closer. Even KAT is to an extent. No one is expecting OG or Bridges or anyone else to do that. Doesn't matter what team those two guys are on, that will never be their role b/c that's not who they are, and neither is Trey. and that doesn't mean OG or Trey can't hit shots in the clutch or even hit shots off the dribble, b/c they both do, but you're never going to give them the ball at halfcourt and say "we need a basket" and expect them to succeed. And if you don't have that guy on your team, then you'll always be a below .400 team.

Yes this is exactly what I'm talking about. Are you under the impression it would be someone other than those 2 guys?

It seems like you are just regurgitating your stance that they have not proven to do more and therefore won't. And again, I'm not disagreeing.

They are 100% expected to be the guys with the ball in their hands at the end of games. That's the argument. I never once said they will succeed, they are indeed expected to be those guys and yes the coach expects them to succeed.

quote:

And you thinking they are magically going to be able to when they've proven that's not part of their nba arsenal is a you problem.

The problem is you think I'm expecting them to be able to do it when I literally said I have 0 expectations. The coaches, team, etcc is expecting them to do it, I'm just acknowledging those are the guys we are expecting to step up. I was responding directly to a comment referencing that.

Zion/ Trey are expected to be our best players and take game winning shots. That's what your arguing against. Never argued whether they would be successful. And its not really an argument whether Z/ Trey are those guys, they are. That's it.

I didn't say any of that. I wasn't talking about either of them closing out games.. I'm sure both will be the closer depending on the night. You have me mixed up with Teddy. I'm simply stating that "Zion is who we thought he was."

i just want to point out the ridiculousness of this statement.

an opinion based on the facts of the past? wow. what a crazy thing to do?
And it's an opinion not solely based on just their past, but on the past of all the nba players i've watched over the last 30 years that i've been watching the nba.
My opinions also come from looking at comparable stats to other similar players.
Like this:

Fears shot 59% from inside 3" his rookie year. Not that great, but somewhat expected.
Do I think he can be a 70% finisher? no. Do I think he can get to around 65%? Absolutely. Now why would I think that? Well, my eyes tell me he has the handles, the quickness, and the athleticism to blow by just about anyone in the league, so getting to the rim isn't difficult by any means for him. Finishing at the rim with nba players is a lot different than it was in college. Learning when to attack and when not to is something he can learn to be better at. If Jarrett Allen is already in position waiting for him, it's probably not the best idea to go challenge him. If Jarrett Allen is on the right block while Fears is getting to the left side of the rim, then by all means challenge him, and he still might get the block or alter the shot enough to make a miss.

Maxey shot 59% his rookie year. followed that up with shooting 65/63/67/64/68
Murray shot 61/62/58 his first 3 years from inside 3'. then it clicked for him and he's been over 68% the last 6 years.
Fox was at 65% his rookie year, and has averaged 72% since then.
Mitchell was below 64% his first 4 years, then shot up to over 70% the next 3 years.

Notice the type of players i'm comparing him too? I"m not going to look at a guy like Haliburton and compare him, even though his improvement is similar, but Haliburton does not move like the guys i mentioned above, or Fears.

Should you expect Fears to shoot 65% from inside 3' this year? It's certainly an attainable expectation, but history says he may not and that's ok. Is Fears going to shoot 70% from inside 3' this year? magic eightball says "very doubtful"

and I can guarantee you we will see more of Murray with the ball in his hands in the clutch, as well as Fears and even DQ. Trey will not have the ball in his hands in the clutch unless someone passes it to him to hit a shot. Thinking anything different about Trey is just illogical. Zion ultimately will have the ball in his hands in those games where he's dominant, but he'll dribble it off his foot or fall down and then we'll ask Murray/Fears to do it the next game.

Neither of Zion or Trey have reached their full potential/ ceiling. The whole basis of this argument is because you know they should be able to do more and haven't. That's the point you are arguing. Have not and can not are 2 different things.

You are now saying they are not capable of more. That's incorrect.

You can expect them not to do it because they haven't done it.

The coaches/ team can also expect them to do it because they can be capable of more.

And none of this has anything to do with the original response simply stating that "Zion and Trey are expected to close games for us".

Unless you are disagreeing that Z/ Trey are those guys and can name the other person then everything else is moot.
