Pelicans Trade Ideas...as SELLERS
Posted on 1/19/19 at 6:08 pm

Okay, we all know the Pels need to sell now. They would need to play .700+ basketball to make the playoffs. .730+ to avoid the Warriors. And now AD is out during a brutal part of the schedule. Buying would be beyond stupid and doing nothing and letting assets go for nothing (or worse, overpay them next summer) would be terrible also.
They need to sell. Here are my realistic possible trades.
Which ones do you guys like and do you have other ideas?

I wouldn’t mind going after DSJ.

Going after implies you aggressively trade things for someone. If they give him to me for nothing, I might take him. Or if I get him for Randle, sure. But I wouldn't 'go after' him. Not the type of talent I want for the new era.
Give me high effort, high IQ, humble, multi-positional guys.
Smith might fit one of those. Maybe zero.

They likely wont be sellers unless Dell is fired beforehand.

I know as much as anyone what is likely. And if you knew what trade is closest as of the current moment, you would be even more doubtful that they will do the smart thing and sell.
But maybe we get lucky for once and they do the right thing. If so, what trades would you hope they pursue?

If we become sellers, I would prefer to make moves where we get draft assets, but dont take on long term money.. I want our new GM to be able to start with a clean slate and make decisions on who he wants to keep (which is why I say don't trade Niko)
With that said, I know Moore, Randle and Hill arent attractive trade options, so stay put with what we have

That doesnt sound too encouraging.. good trade or dumb arse trade that's close?

Blowing it up and keeping Jrue is asinine. He has the second most trade value on the team he’s in his prime trading him would bring back more assets by the time the clock resets he’s in his 30s at that point. I know everybody loves Jrue nowadays But at that point he is worth more to another team

What do you consider 'long term money'?
Because I am fine taking on contracts like Biyombo or Crabbe or Marvin Williams, etc if I get a pick and/or young player. Winning big is not a possibility in 2019-20 regardless. So I will take those on and have clean books in the summer of 2020 and all the assets I got for taking on that year of salary.
Now, Batum or Hayward - those kind of contracts I understand not eating. But one year after this one? Gimme, gimme, gimme if I get assets.

I assume they are targeting Conley and will continue to be buyers until Davis asks to be traded. I believe they will convince themselves that their real timeline to convince Davis to stay is next Feb deadline.
With that said, I want to move on from this era. Davis is a great talent but the NBA is about perimeter talent nowadays.
I just dont want them to trade any of their picks. And trade Randle for anything, just get him off the team. I would be willing to take on contracts that go through next season in order to acquire small assets (draft pick or prospect). Jrue is off limits to me.

I think you should just stop arguing this point. Your mind won't be changed, nor will mine and others. Just agree to disagree and move on

I think its time to start looking at the future. I would just ride the season out at this point or sell like you say. The next five years have potential with our Ad haul. Unless we screw that up which would be a bigger disaster than him actually wanting to leave.

Anything after this season.. I would prefer a 100% clean slate for the new GM...
I may consider longer term deals (not past 2020), but I would want guys that are basically unplayable (like Hill), but I'd want unprotected 2021 1st rounders in return..
For instance if Washington would take Moore and Wes for Mahinmi and an unprotected 2021 1st, I'd do it, as moves like that gives us flexibility to make bigger trades in the offseason if we hire the right GM and coach that talks AD into staying

Can it get much worse? AD is a great player, but this has been a .430 win team in his tenure here.
They need to build up the foundation, focus on culture and player development, and the next 7-8 years can easily be more successful than the last 7
Think of it this way - with the AD rebuild, they were starting from zero. In this next rebuild, they could start it with 6-8 GOOD assets.

I am on the same page with you on getting Haywood and Tatum. Gives us present and future and most of all hope. I worry that Kyrie wont resign with Celtics and that could put a dent of them going all in a AD. Dont want Simmons at all. The Lakers haul has big time young talent but who knows.

If Dell sells, he loses his job. Demos won't tank. He trades for Ross and maybe makes a coaching change by ASB.

The problem is there’s no reason for the current regime to look for the future. Sure they may look at a life without AD, but if they manage to keep their jobs, which I think is a real possibility, then they likely will have sold the idea of being just as competitive without AD right away.
Add a Conley for Randle/Moore/1st and get Tatum/Smart and 1sts for AD and all you really need to do is add a rim protector to have a competitive team.
BTW, I’m not advocating that plan. If I go after Conley now it’s be during the summer after I see what else is going down, I’m just saying if they don’t clean house I think the plan would be something like
Conley/Payton
Jrue/Frank
Tatum/Smart
Niko/Miller
Whiteside/Okafor
I can see that team being better than this years team because of the depth and doubling the playmakers.

Didnt he trade Chris Paul for Amino, Gordan and Rivers and keep his job? Cant say getting Tatum and Haywood would get him canned.

We should be sellers.
Why? The talent ceiling is capped as it is. You either dig the hole deeper by trading future assets, likely not contend, and be fricked whether AD leaves or stays or you hit reset and sell the idea to AD that this is the only way to get better with the idea to contend in 3-4 years when the gsw era dies. The LA Lakers never get far. And the youth drafted, talent signed in the future, and AD prime can carry them to Rings

the primary reason to sell is that there’s nothing worth buying this year.
pels need tradeable salary, Moore’s 8MM isn’t enough
Crabbe , Williams, even MKG types
