for me, at least, it isn't the fact that I don't think he currently can play a bit. it's more the question of will he be able to stay somewhat healthy. so far, he's been unable to do that for an extended period of time. is that worth the risk of giving up some combination of rivers, smith, miller, and roberts?
I think you have to ask yourself what gives you a better chance to compete for a championship?
A healthy Greg Oden
OR
any of the four players you listed.
Each of those four are backups at best. I'm trading any of them for starter potential any day. They are easily replaceable.
(Only reason I'd think twice about Rivers is his value is going up. I don't expect him to be on this team two years from now)

Not necessarily saying it applies here, but I think we've all become enamored with or over valued certain players just because of the suckage of talent we've lived with on this team over the years

Maybe we can sign Sasquatch, too.

his PER and per 36 minutes numbers are both pretty damn good. if he could put up similar numbers, it's totally worth it. from what we know, it's a total gamble. but i'm sure Dell and the FO know a hell of a lot more than us. i trust them to make the right call. my biggest concern is if he isn't healthy, then you lost assets for nothing. but i suppose that's the gamble you have to take if you want to move to top 5 in the conference.
a well functioning, healthy Oden combined with what the team already has, though...total fap worthy.

I hope you're counting Oden. Someone implied earlier that he makes us a championship contender.

It's a gamble worth taking. Smith is a nice backup but not irreplacable. Rivers' future with this team was ended during draft night. Oden could be all the difference for us this season if he were healthy.

Any FA move is a gamble. My point is losing any four replaceable bench players doesn't mean shite in the grand scheme of things. Acquiring talent can catapult you to a whole new level.

I don't know about Oden's health, and I said that I'll trust Demps if he does go and get him, but I'm still wary of a guy with so many knee issues that hasn't played in almost 3 calendar years. Gordon's situation is different because they aren't all knee issues and he's actually been able to at least play a portion of every season. I'm very skeptical about Oden ever producing again and I won't be happy if we give up one of our guys to get him, but I'll give it a chance and wait to see if he can produce.

If you're referring to my post I said "better chance to compete for a championship."
Every move the Front Office takes should be in furtherance of that goal, no matter how far away it may seem.

But trading held assets for a shot in the dark is past risky to sketchy.

If he's healthy and a part of our core for the next 3-4 years... i think very much so we can contend with the best of them very soon.

Smith, Miller, and Roberts are hardly "held assets." They are easily replaceable bench players.
Rivers is another story. If he continues his improvement his stock will rise.

That is such a big 'IF'

Rivers, Smith, Miller, and Roberts becoming integral parts of the team are even bigger IFs

I think it's a risk worth taking.

You have to give up either Smith or Rivers. So you lose depth at the 5 to sign a guy who may or may not be able to fill that void you createf, or you trade a top 10 pick before year 2.
