At some point we have to move some of these picks

I'm not sure that time is now, though.

I'd rather, for now, draft talent, develop it, and hope they turn into either players or assets, and trade those picks later when the time is right for a true star.

We can kick 2nd round picks down the road for a future 2nd here and there.

Problem is, you have to have playing time to showcase that talent in order to get a decent return on it. We could draft an absolute stud, but if we don't have playing time available for them to play, teams will never know and we would be trading them for pennies on the dollar. In a case like that, the draft pick would be more valuable in a trade than the player.

According to @KeithSmithNBA, there are rumors that some free agents have already agreed to contracts with teams for next season.

Hmmm, wonder what teams and what FA?

When the moratorium is lifted, things will move quickly

Very quickly. Windhorst wouldn't say which, but he's heard of 2 FA deals wink wink agreed to. Bobby Marks said he's heard about some S&Ts lined up.

Interesting thing, all of these shows always wind up talking about Jrue as they go down their list of trade targets. Yeah the Pels are super secret and they don't have to have an extension with Jrue lined up yet, but the fact that we haven't heard any chatter about an extension makes me wonder if he wants to stay.

If the sports journalists have heard 10 teams are interested in him you know his agent has too. I have to think Jrue's agent is telling him "you're so popular you should either be getting way more money, or get traded to a contender and be playing in the Finals this season."

There's still two years to run on his contract. Think it's normal to not hear about an extension 2 years out.

Plus, we haven't heard extension news on just about anyone, save AD

He has a player option for that 2nd year which most experts and fans assume he'll opt out of for one last big pay day. So most are viewing him as an expiring this year. You absolutely would have extension talks with Jrue this offseason. They may not go anywhere and the Pels would probably still bet on themselves being better and not make a move until the deadline, but those negotiations should be happening soon if they haven't already.

I'm just saying all of this interest in Jrue from around the league might drive his price up enough to make extending him impractical even if that is Griff's first choice.

Fair enough. They could be having talks already, we're just not hearing them yet.

We're not hearing anything leaked about anyone's contract situation this off-season yet. Don't think it's just a Pels and Jrue thing

The fact that Jrue is basically an expiring works against us in trade talks right?

Would teams be chasing a verbal agreement from Jrue that he would re-sign with them to part with a good amount of capital?

I'd like to pry Ibaka from Toronto ...Can't take on his salary outright after Maxing BI ...wonder what assets it would take ??

Zo/Frank
Jrue/JJ/NAW
BI/Hart
Zion/Melli
Ibaka/Hayes

Some projections for Ibaka says he will get about 5 million a year, which we could use MLE or BAE for that.

Ibaka is 45 years old, not sure how much he has left in the tank, wouldn't mind for a cheap deal though.

Have you never heard people joke about how Ibaka is much older than his listed age?

There are so many shitty trade ideas involving the Pelicans being thrown about by people around other teams:

Ingram to Golden State for a steamy pile of shite

Jrue to the Clippers for Beverly, Lou Williams, and 2 second round picks

It's like these hometown writers come up with the best case scenario for them and then try to back their way into some convoluted logic of why the Pelicans should consider it.

I’m on record saying I would trade Jrue straight up for number 6 in this upcoming draft (which is probably a lower value than most here give him), but this is just laughable.

It's not as bad as Ingram for Wiggins and Golden State's 2021 pick....

I think most knowlegeable people think Jrue and Beal are roughly in the same tier, even if Beal's at the top of that tier. Yet Beal is someone teams would go all in for but not Jrue. Zach Lowe basically said the Nuggets should hold MPJ back in case Beal hits the market and then it'd be ok to give him up. Honestly I think Jrue's a better fit for a team like the Nuggets and Brooklyn than Beal. Both teams already have 2 goto offensive stars and could use a boost to their perimeter defense. Jrue may not be a better player, but I think he's a better fit.

A guy that scores like Beal is always going to be considered a bigger prospect. No one cares about defense.
