slightly off topic, but this is from Simmons' column on Carmelo today

If you think the national writers are bad about being completely ignorant of smaller teams like the Pels, the local beat guys from another conference are even worse.

quote:

Lang Greene @LangGreene about 5 minutes ago

Pelicans summer. Got a big man to put next to Anthony Davis. Added: Omer Asik, Alonzo Gee and Russ Smith. Lost: S. Hopson and Anthony Morrow

Lang Greene covers the Hawks and he normally seems pretty decent, but he's obviously out of his depth talking about a lesser team from another conference. At least he didn't think we kept Brian Roberts.

That Simmons column today was incomprehensible.

"Dirk is a top 20 all time player. He won a title with a non star supporting cast. Melo, at his best, had a couple years like Dirk, but he's much more similar to guys like Nique, Dantley, and Pierce. They all weren't good enough to be the best guy on a title team. But I really like Melo. Ergo Melo could have won a title as the best guy on a team."

Wah?

Plus:
quote:

Melo, at his best, had a couple years like Dirk,
Melo probably had the best year of his career last year. And his second best year, the year before.

That’s why I dislike comparing Carmelo and Dirk. But I keep coming back to these two playoff lines:

2011 Dirk (21 games): 27.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.5 apg, 49-46-94%, 8.9 FTA, 25.2 PER
2009 Melo (16 games): 27.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.1 apg, 45-36-83%, 9.0 FTA, 24.3 PER

quote:

So could Carmelo morph into 2011 Dirk if you gave him the right situation?

quote:

Just for fun, the best two-year regular-season runs for Bernard, ‘Nique Wilkins, Dirk and Carmelo:

• King (1984-85): 29.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.8 apg, 55-07-78%, 23.8 PER, 35.8 mpg, 31.5 usage
• ’Nique (1986-87): 29.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 3.0 apg, 47-25-82%, 23.4 PER, 38.3 mpg, 32.6 usage
• Dirk (2006-07): 25.6 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 3.1 apg, 49-41-90%, 27.8 PER, 37.2 mpg, 29.5 usage
• Melo (2013-14): 28.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.9 apg, 45-39-84%, 24.6 PER, 37.9 mpg, 33.9 usage

If Simmons really understands whatever it is he is trying to prove, I'm impressed. I typically enjoy his work. This article just makes no sense the way he presents it.

Oh I like when Bill Simmons talks about the other 29 teams. Just not the Pels. So Bill, keep on keeping on, but GTFO.

Just going quickly through the piece, and considering how he ended it, it seems like it would've actually made sense if he'd just left out the first paragraph you quoted:
quote:

"Dirk is a top 20 all time player. He won a title with a non star supporting cast. Melo, at his best, had a couple years like Dirk, but he's much more similar to guys like Nique, Dantley, and Pierce. They all weren't good enough to be the best guy on a title team. But I really like Melo. Ergo Melo could have won a title as the best guy on a team."
Specifically that sentence. He basically spends the rest of the article trying to prove Melo is/was actually good enough to be that guy if circumstances were different.

Maybe its Casspi saving face after getting waived. Maybe he just really didn't want to play here.

quote:

David Pick @IAmDPick
"This is a big season for my career, it's important that I play," Omri Casspi said upon arrival in Israel.

David 'Dubi' Pick @IAmDPick
"New Orleans isn't the best situation for me. We'll finalize terms of split," Omri Casspi added.
If its the latter

I think they probably said Luke Babbit is close enough to Casspi and already knows the system.

And finally some national media love for Dell Demps

So many eyebrows raised when New Orleans cut Greg Stiemsma so late in season to sign Melvin Ely. Ely's UNGUARANTEED deal clinched Asik trade

Some shrewd salary-cap management by Pelicans GM Dell Demps ends up landing Asik next to face of the franchise Anthony Davis & Ryan Anderson

No doubt. Even if it's never actually been discussed in a "take a paycut and I'll hook you up later" context, I'd be shocked if Dirk's business relationship with Cuban ends when he retires.
