Its a lot of optimism, which I honestly don't expect. He was POOR defensively.

As for shooting, I think he's only going to improve so the PPG/RPG/APG will be there if he gets minutes. the limitation is purely defense. who cares if he can space and hit 40% of his 3pters if he gives up an easy 2-3 pts every 3/4 possessions

Hawkins needs to focus on not being a liability on defense

I mean, I think those shortcomings are a little overstated...

Hawkins would not have been collecting DNPs last year if he could guard. And 16% of his attempts came from within 3’, for a paltry 43%

I saw this as a Hawkins guy. If he plays himself into the rotation we will be better for it

This

We're all rooting for him but him being a mainstay in the rotations this season is a big question mark, not a guarantee.

He should get the minutes to start, but it's up in the air as to whether he can keep earnings them.

The thread CLEARLY SAYS "OFFENSIVELY".

Do you know what part of basketball was not being spoken on in THIS thread???

Herb is so nice defensively and is money on the catch and shoot, but I think he's the odd man out (CJ also)

Herb is pretty much the only one guaranteed to not be the odd man out other than Zion. Herb gives you abilities that no one else on the team gives you. That's not even considering that Hawkins is not going to be Klay or Reggie. I appreciate your optimism, this board needs it, but that is some serious wishful thinking.

I bet they shoot 35 a game.

Maybe, but that's a far cry from the 40 we've been hearing about for 3 seasons now.

If Willie says he wants us shooting 40 a game, that means he wants us being a top 2 team in 3pt attempts.

If we shoot 35 a game, we are league average. So that's still not accomplishing what Willie keeps telling us.

It's like the healthy Zion, maybe this is the year it happens and we get healthy and invested Zion all season. Maybe we shoot 40 3s per game. Those things very well might happen, but we've also heard all this same stuff every preseason for multiple seasons now. I certainly won't bet on us shooting 40 3s a game, and I'd rather just wait and see.

If Willie truly means 40 3’s per game, then playing Hawkins at least 15 minutes a game as a rotational player even when Trey comes back, is an absolute must. Since this thread is about hawk, correct me if I’m wrong on that..

Yea I said this before the team started considering Herb at the 5. I wanna see it if they are serious but I think that can work until they figure out the long term decision.

I honestly think that universally, Zion, Trey, Herb can all play the 2-4. It's a gift and a curse because players that can be great at 1 thing can get moved. The confidence in Hawkins comes from his quick and clean arse shot. He's a better spot up shooters and much better that Tray at going around screens. Klay did other things well and was a good defender coming out of college. I honestly think Hawk has that type of off ball skills. Just won't ever get a chance to be a #2 because he doesn't really do much else (although his 1 dribble pull up on closeouts are money and he's a little more quicker than Klay).

We take 2pt shots nearly 66% of our possessions.

That means currently we are shooting 32 3's a game at 33% possessions.

Statistically if we just converted an extra 16% to make it an even 50/50 split then data wise we would be shooting 45 3's.

That's not including the fact that PG + more 3's = more possessions.

I personally don't think there's many games we shoot under 35 3's.

I'm curious to know what our "points per possession" average was last year compared to other teams.

That's the stat we are trying to crush this year.

Zion cannot play the 2 regularly. He's fairly quick for his size, but he would get exposed defensively. Even putting him at the 3 exposes defensive mismatches that you have to compensate for.
