Toronto Raptors center Marc Gasol is exercising his $25.6M player option for next season, returning to the defending NBA champions, league sources tell ESPN. Gasol could’ve entered free agency.

We have no need for Capela whatsoever
I wouldn't say that. I mean, he's not top of the list by any stretch, and I wouldn't want to necessarily give up a valuable asset for him, but I think he's a useful player on a decent deal. Worst case, you can flip him 2 years down the line or something.

Kind of hurts us a bit. Means the type of big we are looking for, 1 less off the market, more teams with cap space pursuing that kind of guy.

Capela is only effective b/c he plays with Harden.
He's rather useless on most every other team.

Give them that great Cleveland 2020 1st from Atlanta. The pick that will end up being 2 second rounders

I’d rather the cap space than Capela.

His contract starts at $16.8m next season and only gets worse from there.

The Knicks have refused to tender Emmanuel Mudiay, making him an UFA.

You don't think his defense, rebounding and shot blocking translates anywhere else?

Mudiay should get a backup job

This past season with the Knicks was easily his best

It's 14.9 next season. And maxes out at 18 in year 4. Could increase with (unlikely) incentives though. It's not a terrible deal, but it's also not high on the list for me.

That’s what I get for using Hoopshype instead of Spotrac...

Hoopshype has his projected salary at 16.9, 18, 19.1, and 20.2.

Spotrac says a base of 14.9, 16, 17, 18.2 with bonuses for reaching the WCF, having a 30% defensive rebound rate, and hitting 65% of his FTs.

Basically one has all the bonuses counted and the other has them marked as unlikely.

Absolutely. But for $75M for the next 4 years, that's not worth it.

It's like Tristan Thompson and his contract. It was a decent contract b/c he did something that was very beneficial to a Lebron led team. Had he been playing for the Trailblazers that whole time, he doesn't get that kind of contract. He'd still be a good big, but not worth that much. and it's the same for Capela. Sure he's a good center, but he's not worth that much to most other teams. he was to the Rockets.

It's 4 years 66.2 mil guaranteed, with an extra 9ish mil in incentives (that are labeled unlikely). Not sure if that is enough for you to re-consider, but it's not 18mil/year.

It's really not a bad deal, and it's a really good deal for Houston, but that amount of money and years to a team like us is wasted money.
When we signed Asik to that stupid deal i argued fervently how stupid it was to give that much money to a guy that was completely useless on offense. While Capela is obviously a lot better than Asik, the only thing he provides offensively is catching alley oops. Unless you have a dominant offensive player, like Harden, or LeBron, or KD, then having a guy that limited offensively making that much money is silly.
