He's also a truly awful defender. I hope that we can get him back on a two-way, but there was no way that he was getting minutes this season without significant injuries to several of our players.
He looked a lot better on defense than Hawkins does. However, I think you are right in that he would not get minutes without multiple injuries.

A trade has to be imminent right?

Ingram, Hawkins, JRE feels like the three we would deal.

Yeah something has to be working behind the scenes.

Can’t involve Matt now for sure, otherwise his deal would be for 3 years due to S&T rules

This must've been a spur of the moment thing, because the marketing department isn't putting out a "Thank You Matt" graphic on its social channels if the plan was always to restructure his deal.

If this is suggestive of a trade it isn't Ingram. They risked losing Matt Ryan to save less than $200k. That's the kind of move you make if you don't think you're trading Ingram and taking less money back at some time this season.

It does however make a Hawkins for Kessler trade make more sense. You have Hawkins' "replacement" in Ryan since he cleared waivers. Cutting Ryan's pay also doesn't get you much if you don't plan to do a trade like Hawkins for Kessler. I'm not saying it's a lock, but if there's a trade the Matt Ryan pay cut points to it's Hawkins for Kessler.

Where did you see it was a 200k savings?

I haven’t seen anyone report the terms yet except for Shams saying 1 year

Shamit has been talking about this as a possibility for a while. He had a slightly above minimum deal so you could sign him to an actual minimum and save close to $200k. The crazy thing is it’s unclear if even after that Hawkins for Kessler gets you under the cap. Different sources have different amounts and you’re close enough that $100,000 or less could be the difference between tax payer or rebate receiver.

If I added all the numbers up correctly using Spotrac’s figures we would have approximately $2,000 under the tax if we swapped Hawk and JRE for Kessler, depending on what Matt’s new deal comes in as.

If Matt’s new contract is less than JRE then whatever the difference between their contracts are would give us that much lower, and would allow us to convert someone like Jemison at the end of the season.

Hawkins needs to stay.

He's on a good contract, and is a logical replacement for McCullom in a year.

Just start the season and see what happens. If Zion gets to 270 then he will clearly be the Alpha.

Nah, I would trade Hawkins before his value plummets. He can't defend nor can he dribble. He's a good enough shooter and young enough player where teams would feel they can make something out of him. He's talented but a lot of his skill set we can get with a vet min player especially with our current roster construction.

This is something most teams don't do enough of. It's just an undeniable fact that if you don't show All Star caliber talent early, you are almost always going to be traded before the end of your 2nd contract. Sometimes a team might get more value out of the player than a trade over that time, but usually they would be better off cutting cashing in. I was one of the more pro Dyson players on this board, but I have no regrets trading him for Murray. That's exactly the kind of move a team should make.

Hawkins is going to be a 6th man at best on this team. His current skill set is replaceable, arguably by 2 players at the very end of the roster in Matt Ryan and Antonio Reeves. Is Hawkins for Kessler the right move is a valid question, but is Hawkins someone we should be holding on tight to? He hasn't give us a reason to think so.

I'm really surprised we are going into the year with a 15 man roster and into the tax.

I would have thought they were going to keep a spot open for flexibility.

The season hasn't started yet. If you were going to trade Hawkins for a big, you would want to make sure Matt Ryan cleared waivers first. Does Griff also want to make sure he has Trey locked into an extension before trading Hawkins away?

After signing Jemison I feel a little more comfortable giving it 10 games with the GLeauge center committee before making a move. Jemison brings the big body blue collar big type they were missing. I know I've brought up the Ajinca/Stiemsma comparison for this strategy, but Jrue was injured back then so we had fringe NBA players getting major minutes for those teams. I'm talking Brian Roberts, Anthony Morrow and Austin Rivers as 3 of the top 7 in total minutes.

It makes way too much sense.

As long as we dont give up too much I would love that trade.

Griff has royally fricked up the ingram situation but his moves around the margins this offseason I have really liked.

Got great value on the Murray trade.

Theis, Karlo, Missi, Jemison, signing Javonte and still finding a way to keep Matt Ryan. Those are all goods moves IMO

1000% agree. I was Dyson's biggest fan but even I admit that if doesnt show offensive improvement in year 3 then his value plummets. We traded him at the right time.

Hawk is gonna play in the league for 10 years but he's gonna do it on like 8 different teams that sign him for near the minimum to get shooting on their team. He's a great shooter and incredible off movement but he literally doesn't do a single other thing at the NBA level and that is just not very valuable. Guys like Gary Trent and Malik Beasely are getting minimum contracts and I think hawk has a long way to got before he's even on those guys level

Will bash the franchise and players and tell people how dumb they are in replies but gets his feelings hurt if you say something bad about him or his posts. Dude is so soft. He's a guy that would actually be fun to have on TD (he was for a while I think) but he is too soft, you have to have tough skin on here if you are as strongly opinionated as him.

The Pels local "media/beat reporters" overall have to be the worst in the NBA. I don't follow other teams guys obviously but man I don't even get on X anymore because there's literally nothing insightful on there.
