re: Looney’s contract has a 2nd year Team Option

The idea should be for the team to give Missi, Matkovic, and Queen every opportunity to earn those minutes while sprinkling Looney in there. It's harder to do if they go after a player that feels they need to start or play bigger minutes that our young bigs. Looney has no issues playing that role and has done so his entire career.
One of Missi, Matkovic, and Queen has to emerge this year.

Jose has arguably done more for this franchise than Zion has at 1/15th of the price.

better. 8 is still a big overpay, but it’s only for one year and fills a hole. So I feel much better now about it now.
You can feel better if you like, but as you said Looney is here because we overpayed, which we have to do to acquire assets outside of the draft.
I doubt Looney’s market anywhere else was above $5M so let’s hope we get some good minutes to help our young bigs.

This again has absolutely nothing to do with disliking Jose and everything to do with facts.
What you said was your opinion, not facts, or even an opinion based on facts.
Let's look at some actual facts, mmmkay
Jose isn't all that different in terms of what he does as a backup PG to Ty Jerome, who just signed for 3/$28 and is 28, or TJ McConnell, who signed 4/$45M extension last offseason (contract starts this year and he is 33), or Payton Pritchard, who signed for 4/$30M last year and is 27.
If 27 year old Jose just does what Jose has been doing, he'll be signing a similar deal next offseason.
Jose last 3 years:
173 games played, 33 started
21.4 mpg
8.8 ppg
3.2 apg
1.2 st/g
1.2 tov/g
35.6% from 3 on 4.4 attempts
2025 on/off NetRtg 0.8
2024 on/off NetRtg 10.0 (highest on the team, only year he didn't have to start any games)
2023 on/off NetRtg 2.8 (4th highest on the team)
McConnell last 3 years:
225 games played, 11 started
18.8 mpg
9.3 ppg
5.1 apg
1.0 st/g
1.6 tov/g
38.8% from 3 on 0.7 attempts
2025 on/off NetRtg -6.8 (Only Obi Toppin and Jarace Walker were worse that played any signficant minutes)
2024 on/off NetRtg 1.0
2023 on/off NetRtg 1.6
Ty Jerome last 3 years:
117 games played, 5 started (lots of injuries)
19.0 mpg
10.2 ppg
3.2 apg
0.9 st/g
1.1 tov/g
42.4% 3 point shooting on 2.9 attempts
2025 on/off NetRtg 0.8
2024 on/off NetRtg (played 2 games)
2023 on/off NetRtg with GSW -9.2
Payton Pritchard last 3 years:
210 games played, 11 started
22.6 mpg
10.5 ppg (breakout year this year at 14.3)
3.0 apg
0.6 st/g
0.9 tov/g
39.4% 3 point shooting on 5.5 attempts
2025 on/off NetRtg 0.1
2024 on/off NetRtg 3.0
2023 on/off NetRtg -6.3
there is nothing "end of the bench" about Jose.

That's awesome man, what are all these accomplishments he's done for us? Oh just play? Cool so he's done absolutely nothing except show up to a job he gets paid for.
He's a good nonessential employee. Meaning he works really hard and does a lot for not actually being important. He's a guy who is replaceable but makes it tough to be replaceable.
Y'all still just don't get the point.
How much I like Jose or what Jose has "done for us" (which is a sad statement considering its literally nothing) doesn't matter. Can we do better and continue to upgrade? Yes. Are we winning championships? No. Does that mean we should continue to upgrade? Yes.

You just compared Jose to (3) guys that most of this fanbase would rather have than Jose.
And none of those guys include the rookies every year that end up better than Jose and all of those guys....
This isn't just a "swap Jose" with another vet type situation. I want to get him off the roster so we can actually find players with more potential. Why would we just settle with 27 y/o Jose for 5+ years. It just doesn't make sense. Why is he good enough for you to not want to upgrade?
Y'all for real want to trade Zion and downgrade to get him off the roster before wanting to upgrade from Jose who is an overall meaningless player in the grand scheme of the NBA. Its weird.

I remember the Original Jose Jose Jose play in game. A game that Zion didn't play in, btw. When your UDFA has a bigger moment than your franchise player, you typically blame the franchise player for not carrying the role players, not the UDFA's for not carrying the franchise player.
If we are basing it off of team accomplishments, then what team accomplishment has CJ or Zion or BI contributed to that Jose hasn't? Jose is a great 7-9th man. Our issue in this most recent era is that our 1 and 2's have completely sucked and let us down. Our role players have been very high level both here and when they move on to other teams.
Trading Jose won't fix a thing. Defining Jose as one of our worst 3 contracts is also an absolute joke when we have a guy like Zion making more than $1M per game played.

Good post. Jose has been proving the doubters wrong his whole career. He isn’t done yet.

I feel like he shits on Herb more than Jose and is for sure the only person that feels the way he does about Herb

I could have replaced "worst" with "most useless" and people would still be upset that I made an obvious and correct comment that Jose Alvarado is an end of the bench player in the NBA. If you rank NBA assets as a whole he is bottom half of all teams rosters.
What an idiotic thing to say.

What Dumars has done is engineer a roster for a soft rebuild, with the option to dump Zion and do a hard rebuild next year if it doesn't work out.
Imagine if we had our own lottery pick to go with someone else's assets next year. Instead, we'll have no pick of our own to go with a Zion who has no value. Do you really think a team is giving us a top 5 pick for Zion at this point? Because that's what this kicking this can of shite down the road likely cost us.

This is the fallacy of the theory that we can just trade Zion and get back into the 2026 lottery. If Zion is good, we're not trading him. If (or when) Zion gets an injury that keeps him out for months, nobody is trading an unprotected first for him.
The only path forward is to rely on Zion. Which is absolutely nuts. He's not going to all of a sudden, 6 years into his career, grow up and be in shape and not get injured. You are what you are.
