Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is not happy with the events that transpired to expedite the departure of Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Los Angeles Lakers, saying it was "bad for the league."

Kerr said the trend of players who are not free agents forcing trades to get out of existing contracts, as evidenced by the Davis-to-Lakers deal, is a "real problem."

We prefer to keep politics off this board. Thanks.

I mean yeah it’s not great but what can you do?

Honestly I think the it’s the right thing to do to tell a team you won’t resign

It gives them options other than you walking in a year.

But trying to dictate the terms of the trade a year and a half out? frick that.

He makes good points, but playing devils advocate, the players can say they get traded at a whims notice, so why is it a problem when the shoe is on the other foot?

The only thing you can do is what Griff is trying to do. Build a first class organization. It's what the Raptors did. It wasn't enough to keep Kawhi, but it was enough to crack open a very small window and win a championship.

He's not wrong. But why didn't he complain about the circumstances that allowed an MVP in his prime to join a 73 win team that already had 3 all-stars, had just been to back-to-back NBA Finals and then exceed the salary cap by a wide margin to keep that team together for 3 seasons? That was pretty bad for the league too.

Was it though? The league has done better than ever the last several years.

And Kerr made the point that guys like Durant did it right coming and going. He arrived via free agency and then left via free agency. Durant didn't demand OKC trade him to GS, and he didn't demand GS trade him to Brooklyn.

Also, I feel as though the team that is about to lose the star would rather know before the contract is up if the player wants to resign or not (assuming the star has already made his mind up). So the trade request with a year and a half left in the contract isn't necessarily a bad thing for the team. The issue was with how things got leaked by AD's camp mid season and how those leaks hurt the team's prospects of where he could be sent out.

But still, I'd rather him tell us he wanted out when he did as opposed to playing through this year and just leaving.

He’s right in general, it’s a trend that could be really detrimental and is just bad optics.

In this instance though, and in addition to all the other crazy moves in free agency, I think it’s a net positive. On paper there is a lot of parity in the league and there’s quite a few contenders in the bunch. Answering who meets in the finals next year is much tougher than just “Warriors vs LeBron or team b” as it’s been for awhile now.

The new TV deal money has a lot to do with that, but ratings have been falling. Not really as interesting for casual fans when you get the same 2 teams in the Finals for 4 years in a row and everyone expected those teams to win their conferences before the season started. This year should be different though with all the changes with contenders that leave no clear-cut favorites

The "unwritten rule" on that type of thing was that those conversations typically occur the offseason before you enter your last year of your contract (excluding option years).

Agreed, the issue with the trade demand, and how it occurred was that he attempted to tank his own value to other teams. You want to play for a certain team that isn't your own? Okay, do it as a free agent. You shouldn't be able to force your team into trading you to one other specific team.

ETA: that being said, I am very happy with the return that the Pels got in the trade, but it could have very easily go awry. The Lakers were basically forced to do the trade because of LeBron's timeline and the fact that they couldn't throw away another season.

Let Dell Demps know that he won't re-sign? Absolutely the right thing to do. Make it public to try to force an immediate trade to the Lakers? That's a blatant disrespect for the contract that he signed -- totally slimy.

Requesting a trade: No big deal. Gives a team a chance to get back some value instead of letting the player walk for nothing

Forcing a trade to a single team via media narrative: Bad for the league.

Because the player signs a contract, and that contract is owned by the team.

AD started the flood this offseason but it's Paul George who is going to have a lasting legacy. he had years left

Rumors are that the Thunder were looking to pivot, because their roster was too expensive and they realized they weren't winning a championship with George and Russell. So, basically the Thunder were happy when they were called up by the Clippers.
