” I would like to stay and extend my contract," Valanciunas said. "Obviously, during the season, you try to help the team as much as possible, but when the summer comes, you try to take care of your own things – how to extend the contract and stuff." The veteran center also said he expects there to be changes, after the Pelicans disappointing season. "We had some talks with them. I think this summer won't be easy for them, because they will have to make a few key decisions. Our season didn't go as planned, so there will definitely be changes," Valanciunas said.

Interesting, I wonder what was discussed

I don't give a frick what yall say Jonas can be a starting 5 on a title team. Rebounding was far more of a team issue than a jonas issue

I like Jonas but he may get moved and it's not a bad thing. Clearly, Willie and the staff don't trust him, but we instead trot out Nance in big minutes at the end of the season and consistently got crushed in the Nance minutes while Jval held his own. No slight to Nance, he was hobbled.

But the other reason we probably shouldn't extend him is we need room for Herb and eventually Trey contracts.

I like Val. He and CJ get wayyyyyyyy too much hate from Pels fans.

Yeah, I bet he will re-sign on a 1-2 year extension at 8-10 million a year

That would change my opinion above and we should have him sign that deal as soon as possible if he's willing.

I can't see that he'd be willing. I have zero doubt he can get a better deal than that, so if he did sign it, that would mean he must really like it here in New Orleans.

Agreed, that seems pretty low for his market value. I'd like to have JVal back as well. We not only need a revamp in the medical staff, but the coaching has got to improve. We did not utilize our players as well as we should have. The other main thing is calling out Zion and getting his fat arse in shape. He still seems to be a player than likes playing a game for fun and not as a job. CJ, other players, and the front office need to openly hold him accountable.

Centers are so difficult to value. It’s definitely possible Val’s value is closer to ten than twenty. Would be a real interesting discussion with our fan base as far as what our turning point is. I think anything close to $10 million a year and the fan base would start to flip towards the keep and build the statue side.

I'd be shocked if he signed an extension for around $10mil

A good comp example is Naz Reid, where there's a lot of talk that we should try to get Naz Reid, and he's probably going to go in that $10mil price range.

But if we can get Jval for the same, it's an absolute no brainer you want Val over Naz Reid if they're making the same amount. I imagine there's a contingent that would say Reid is better, but they'd be wrong.

Steven Adams still seems like a pretty good comparable and he extended for 2 years and $25 million. How does that sit with everyone?

If he would settle for that, it would be a no-brainer. However, I do not see that happening. I think he will want in the $15-$17 million range.

I would still be fine with that. Pretty soon, with a rising cap, that would seem like a good value. That is basically Nance money.

Value wise, that's still a steal IMO

Only question is how does that affect Herb's extension for next season coming up against the tax. If we can easily maneuver around it and get it done, I'd be for that. It would probably mean trying to move Nance then going with a cheap backup big. I love Nance, but Jval+cheap backup is better than Nance+cheap backup.

JV more than anyone on the team, except maybe Jose, seemed to want to do whatever it took to win. I also can see him staying on a cheaper than you'd expect deal. Where else would he go and have as good of a shot at winning? Any team like that wouldn't have more than the taxpayer MLE to give him because most teams even just near the tax have avoided using the full MLE the last few years. Getting $10 million from the Pels is probably the best combination of money and winning potential he'll find.

JV plays through pain and doesn't complain about a reduced role because he just wants to win. I think losing that would be a big blow to the culture. They just need to find the right 3rd big to take some of the load off of Larry and an assistant that won't let Willie forget how helpful JV can be if you just use him.

He has one of the better defensive rebounding percentages in the league.

People clamor for Miles Turner, but his DR% is closer to Larry’s(around 22%) compared to Val at 33%.

I could live with that. JV should age well. His game is not based on athleticism, and lets be honest, he can't get much slower than he already is

The same few dudes were in every game thread last season saying it was the team around him doing a great job so all he did was get easy and uncontested rebounds all season

If we keep the draft pick, I still think a potential move could be to draft Lively as the cheap backup big with hopes that he takes over for JV in 2-3 years.

I think Val value will go up when Joker pulls about 25 rebounds a night in these finals. Teams are going to be looking for a big center to counter him.

I think the better option is to trade down for a vet shooter and draft a developmental guy like Nnaji who has more upside than Lively.
