Until today I was laughing at people who were saying we should’ve drafted Morant over Zion. I feel stupid now

No, the guy was never matured before we drafted him and he still hasn't developed into an adult. This past offseason he was still going to college frat parties.

I'm convinced he just hasn't matured enough to handle his career, and his parents have convinced him to let them handle it and he just be a kid.

This is something if true, I can’t wrap my head around. By my junior year I thought that it was extremely immature and frankly put, lame as frick to still be partying and getting wasted.

This is a guy who has the potential to be next LeBron, but he just can’t grow up. He may never grow up.

I bet Zion still gets crayons with his place mat when he goes out to eat with the family.

Wasn’t just you. I remember when there was a thread around draft time the idea was shot down with a fury even when a few posters made decent points.

Kushner:

JJ Redick is a Duke guy, a CAA guy and someone with a personal grudge against David Griffin.

For him to light Zion up as a bad teammate and not invested in the franchise or his career, is the most damning condemnation I can think of, short of a current teammate doing it.

The SVG hiring just makes a lot more sense now. David Griffin was hoping that an a-hole coach might be able to get Zion to wake up and better focus on his responsibilities. It failed spectacularly, but I understand the attempt. Sometimes, when an a-hole is yelling at you, it motivates you -- like a drill sergeant.

TBF to Griff as well, both Zion and BI talked a big game about how they liked old school coaching and guys that would coach them hard, both inferred some blame toward Gentry for the team not reaching potential for not holding people more accountable, which, turned out to be just that for both of them: talk.

May have even asked JJ if he thought Stan could get Zion to focus like he did Dwight Howard

And yeah, the problem with a negative news leak about Zion was always that it would further hurt the relationship between him and the team.

For JJ to do it, when everyone knows that David Griffin didn't feed him that information, is perfect, because Griff's hands are obviously clean.

JJ Redick will always be a hero for doing this. If anything, it was tough love that Zion needs.

If this was a CAA action, then it was a last-ditch effort to get Zion away from his parents' influence. I have to believe that the parents have to act as intermediaries in any conversation that they have as well. And they know full well that Zion is destroying his value, both as a player and from a marketing standpoint.

I mean CAA's influence is not some cartoon villain relationship.

CAA is an agency, with various interests, sometimes competing, sometimes in sync, with lots of moving parts.

Influence is likely much more diffuse, and there is no smoky room where the supposed CAA shadow masters gather and use their clients like pawns on a chess board, the clients ultimately hold more power. CAA being so invested with clients at ESPN and elsewhere just means they have the benefit of influence and selective sourcing to their clients on the network, can nudge them on matters here and there.

But the idea JJ was instructed to do this in the name of some larger architected conspiracy at CAA with the ultimate goal of getting him to NY is Q anon level stuff.

His teammates are about to get bombarded by this when they get back from the break, while he's off the grid.

Can't imagine they're going to enjoy that.
