The Pistons have a ton of money that they could have easily afforded a qualifying offer and then either he signs somewhere else and maybe they get a like a 2030 2nd rounder pick swap, or he stays and gamble he can show enough to be traded later. But he was underwhelming the Pistons didn't even want to use a roster spot on him.

Wiseman cannot be an answer here. Larry should not be the starter and he'll eventually get hurt and this team can't afford to have a rookie + Wiseman as only options at that point.

Was he pretty good or did he only get to play when the game was out of hand and no one was trying? I genuinely don’t remember him playing any meaningful minutes last year. Yes he looked decent in mop up duty

Great post and question.

I think I would. Always felt GSW gave up on him a little early.

The Pistons are already nothing but development projects. They don't need another in Wiseman.

Zeller > Wiseman and it will be proven most of the league feels this too when you see their salaries next season.

Wiseman may not even be in the league.

Cody knows where to be on the court and has no athleticism.

Wiseman is the polar opposite.

Not to toot my own horn, but I had Wiseman 12th or 13th on my big board that year. People spent so much time looking at the physical stuff of his game they completely ignored the mental side of it. Wiseman makes Jaxson Hayes look like he has the basketball IQ of Bill Russell.

I'd rather give minutes to a raw Missi than gamble on Wiseman. At the end of the day, we need to focus on getting a starting caliber center on this roster. A flyer like Wiseman is the last thing on my mind.

I'll just remind you all of these stats he has:

FG% defending within 6' of the rim: 56.4%
Same as AD and Jarret Allen.
He only played 17mpg, but averaged 3.7 attempts defended. For comparison, AD and Allen play twice as much as Wiseman, and average 7.6 and 8.3 attempts defended, which is pretty much the same rate as Wiseman

FG% defending the 3: 31.6%
4th in the league for centers

Defending against isolation: .70 Points Per Possession
2nd in the league for centers

If he's available to sign as a backup big for us, it would be stupid not to go get him.

Dude Wiseman played in Detroit last year, and the majority of his minutes were after that 28 game losing streak that sent their season down to the gutter and they needed to tank. They were actively trying to lose most of the time when Wiseman was on the court- I wouldn't call many of Wiseman's minutes "meaningful" either.

If he was so good, why is the worst team in the NBA not even interested? And apparently no one else is either.

B/c they have Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart, and it makes no sense for them to keep him b/c he isn't playing over them.

I"m not pretending he's going to be awesome. But it would be dumb to not take a flyer on him in a backup role if the cost is barely anything.

If Missi wasn't the draft pick, I'd argue that he might be worth a flyer, but I don't think you can have two centers on the team that aren't NBA centers. Not arguing that Missi won't be, he's just not ready to contribute significantly right now. At least one of your backups needs to have some experience/can get you some quality minutes.

I just think there’s still upside there. You can’t teach that size and athleticism.

If he's dumb as frick with no situational awareness, you can't teach him how to play ball, either
