He’s pretty much hit his ceiling here.

He can’t go back to just shooting coach. The shooting is a problem here. The offense sputters. There needs to be a guy to blame if we miss the playoffs (though I don’t think we do). He’s been here a long time.

What are the odds Fred is here next season?

Yeah.. get rid of the one guy on the staff that's universally respected throughout the league for doing a good job.

Maybe they should get rid of everybody's buddy Teresa

Do we need an offensive mind in the coaching room? Probably

Should we get rid of the guy that has gotten the most consistent results out of players?

Yea that’s pretty much a no

I’m not sure. Let’s run down who he is known to work with.

Ingram- Seems to be shooting the shite out of the ball from mid range and the 3 Pt line

Dyson Daniels- Seemed to be hitting more 3’s than anticipated before his mysterious injury.

Herb Jones- shooting terribly. Thing is, he’s never been a good shooter. I’m not certain we can blame this on Vinson. Herb was a 4 year college player and 2nd rd pick for a reason.

Zion- His free throw % was 64% his rookie season. 69.8% year 2. Year 3- Portland. Year 4- 71.4%. Zion seems to be able to make 3’s if he commits to taking them.

Past Student- Lonzo Ball. He undeniably fixed his shot. Lonzo became a top catch and shoot 3 point shooter in the league before his knee died.

Who else does Fred work with shooting wise?

Side Note: Whatever happened to Dantoni? Is he still with the organization in some capacity? Can he help Willie draw up a play or some sets?

When are people going to learn that this isn't all on the coaches? 3 coaches and it's the same ISO bullshite for the last 5 years. BI is a big part of that inefficiency. His game is just inefficient. The coaches don't ask him to take contested fade away shots, he does this on his own. The coaches don't scheme for him to get easy looks because the coaches want to share the ball and find the best shot.

Go back and watch some games where both BI and Zion aren't playing or when CJ is off the court. The ball moves around the court nicely. Does't happen when all 3 are playing or 1 of the 3 are.The rest of the team just ball watch.

It's laughable really.

Totally off topic, BUT frick FRED!!

My beautiful, bright, amazing 12 year old daughter has an eating disorder. She/we has been battling it for over a year, hospitalized out of state for over 6 months in 2022. We named her disorder “Fred” in therapy.

After reading the simple heading to this post I had to rely with, HELL YES!!! FRED NEEDS TO frickING DISAPPEAR FOREVER!!

Its been just my daughter and I since she was 11 months old, so prayers are appreciated.

I wish you all the best my friend.
Puts perspective on life.

Basketball is just a fricking game watching entitled men put a ball through the hoop.

All the best!

I, too, have noticed this.

I don’t think they need to get rid of him, but I do wonder if they’ve started to rely too much on him.

In the past:

Eric Gordon - Became the 2nd best catch and shoot 3pt shooter in the league under us

Tyreke Evans - came to the team averaging like 28% from three, traded after his last full season that peaked at 39%.

Anthony Davis: this was more like a committee thing with Kevin Hanson but pretty sure it was Fred that rebuilt his shot after college. Has regressed in LAL despite taking Kevin with him.

Dante Cunningham: in love with the long two, basically didn’t take 3’s. Gentry wanted him to, Fred built him up to a peak as a 39% three point shooter his later years here.

Herb is actually the most frustrating miss with Vinson. Since apparently they spent like all summer together. And it’s one I’m still baffled by cause while the shot seems a bit less erratic, it’s still this awkward push shot thing that seems to have wildly varying velocity and just looks ugly.

Some Pels fans want to believe Fred is a Wizard. Just because a player he has worked with still struggles does not mean Fred is bad at his job.

There are 29 teams in the league that would love to see the Pels make the mistake of firing Fred Vinson.

I’m just glad he seemed to put roots down here and genuinely loves the city. Wife involved in the community, children at Newman. Cause pretty sure he could pick his city and the given franchise would sprint to write up a contract and push out whoever they need to make space if the Vinson’s ever want a change of scenery.

Coaches are fine, roster is fine.

Blame the two ninnies that can’t stay on the court.

I’m not sure that’s true. Under Gentry the offense was very good and had a ton of movement. Stan had point Zion which was great offensively. This coaching staff has much more talent than both of them and can’t put together an offense. It’s the same stuff with or without BI. We don’t run a consistent offense. We don’t run plays hardly either.. it’s a serious problem. We need to bring in someone to revamp the offense.

I wouldn't say that but I have posted many times that it's funny that this board praises him as the Shot Doctor while also complaining all the time about how we never hit 3s and free throws.

Devil's advocate I have been thinking about for awhile:

The results do not match the reputation.

Fred is considered one of the best shooting coaches in the game...

Yet our team can't shoot for shite. One of the worst 3 point shooting and shooting overall teams in the entire league.

He’s not an omnipotent magical being that can simultaneously fix everyone in one offseason

If you go search for the article on his process, that was posted here in the off-season, it’s an incredibly rigorous and time consuming process that requires a ton of commitment. He basically starts from first principles on everything you do. Where for a month you might only be shooting with your primary hand(no guide hand), 5 feet from the basket for a month to retrain muscle memory. It would be impossible to have Vinson do that for literally every player in one offseason.

Herb was last years guy, Daniels was this years.

Herb has regressed/not progressed like many had hoped, but Vinson’s track record is better than anyone you could name in the league.

We're probably crazy for expecting guys to shoot better in a relatively short time. Sure if you're doing it wrong like Lonzo was you can probably get quicker results, but if you're not a naturally good shooter and it's mainly about getting your 10,000 hours in, that's going to take a while.

Let's say they can shoot for 2 hours a day in season and 6 hours a day out of season. In season = 9 months, Out of season = 3 months. That's roughly 1080 hours a year. It would take nearly a decade to hit the 10,000 hour mark.

Neat.

Our team can't shoot but we have the best shooting coach

Maybe we need a different voice that can get consistent results across the board, who is focused more on adding a few percentage points than some massive, painstaking, year long process with singular players.
