How much does having a C matter?

Looking at the roster, it looks like a huge hole. Everyone keeps saying that you have to have a decent C to go against Jokic and Embiid, etc.

But do you? Playing devil's advocate.

The Knicks just beat Embiid with Hartenstein and Robinson as their only bigs.

Hartenstein who everyone seems to think of as some defensive savant, got cooked for 50 and 39 by a one-legged, fat Embiid, yet the Knicks still won.

Maybe the strategy should just be to let those bigs get their and shut down the rest.

OKC kind of did this to a lesser degree against us. Val was absolutely crushing Chet on offense but our defense just got slaughtered.

So don't waste minutes with JAGs like Theis except in spot duty.

Force the action. 3 > 2. Spread the floor with Zion and let the 3s fly.

Most teams hate posting up anyway.

Yeah, Val might drop 35 on us when we play the Wizards and we probably still beat their arse.

We're going to get killed on the boards but we can also try to run the other bigs off the court.

Val was such a liability. It’s like having a glue guy at middle linebacker that holds the defense together.

Getting those boards was one of the reasons why the Knicks beat them. Combine Hartenstein, Robinson, and Hart and you have a very strong rebounding group.

I have been saying this all off season. It seemed like we were playing Larry 50% of the time at the end of last season, and I would say Theis/Larry is a wash at worst.

But I am also higher on Karlo and Yves than most people. I want to see pg Zion with 2 athletic lob threats. Theis is also probably more athletic than Larry at this point.

We shall see. His offense and rebounding will be missed.

Also, my best friend is a huge Mavs fan. Lively had a very marginal summer league and they were convinced he would spend a lot of time in the G league.

It's safe to say Lively is probably a better prospect than Missi. They were both projected late lottery to early 20's. Both are outlier vertical athletes for bigs. Can Missi give you 70% of what Lively gave the Mavs at 10-15 min a night?

It's not impossible Missy exceeds expectations in a very defined role. Lob threat, block shots, and aggressively board. Maybe... my point is I think we are all being s little too dismissive of Missi.

I don't think Missi even plays this year.

I think Karlo will ultimately get the most minutes. Even Jemison will play more than Miss imo.

Yeah everyone says "Missi is not going to play".... he might not. I watched a lot of his games at Baylor and the kid is a fast learner. Compare how he looked at the beginning of summer league to the memphis game.

The memphis game was pretty damn impressive. He also straight up outplays Jemison.

Between Karlo, Jemison, and Missi, we have three young prospects who all have potential to become the backup center. I think that the competition is one of the most interesting stories of training camp (obviously after any and all BI drama and the impact of skinny Zion).

I couldn't agree more. Throw Theis in there and one of those guys should definitely emerge as good enough to be a backup center. Unfortunately, we don't have a starting center.

Missi is definitely playing this year unless we trade for a starting Center. I see Karlo getting some backup 4 minutes along with the 5. If we don't make a trade, Missi is our only hope to not imploding on the boards, having no rim protection and not offering any resistance to the quality bigs in the league..
And I for one believe Missi will be a factor by mid-season. He may get a few games in Birmingham but he will definitely be getting burn

Don't sleep on Missi looking good enough to start out the gate. It'll be Theis, but we'll know within 3-4 games that Missi should be in the starting lineup.

He doesn't have to be a hero, he will have a specific role that he can achieve early. Rebound, defend the paint and get pass the growing pains of fouling early and often when guarding NBA bigs straight up.

I'm calling it now, Missi will be the Center that closes games at some point this season, sooner than later.

Didn’t read.

If zion stays healthy, let him say when he wants to play center.

He’s a superb athlete who can attack from the opposite basket. Let theis, bi, z, herb, Murray get a run. There’s enough front court depth to cover 5.

We swapped Adams-Favors, Adams-Billy, Val-Hayes, Val-Nance for Messi-Theis. It matters ....but does it really? ..... You know?

This might be a situation kinda like the Saint's O-line this year where everbody says we're gonna suck, but the team knows what they got more than we do.

Karlo and Yves might show out

Yeah you never know with rookies. I saw elite big man athleticism pop from Karlo and Missi, and that's at least something to build on.

I predict one of those two emerges and it makes the summer long center debate a moot point.

I hope you are right, one of those guys stepping up and playing well would be huge for this team and likely a big factor in how they are positioned at the end.

this team and fans are starved for a playoff run

Karlo is going to surprise some people. He reminds me of Maxi Kleber from like 3 or 4 years ago. Athletic, can protect the rim, space a little bit and catch lobs. I have a feeling he's going to be our closing center. Theis isnt in his prime but he can still give you a solid 12-15 mpg. Throw in some minutes for small ball in there too.

Don't think Missi plays much this year in new orleans. Im not sure he's better than Jemison right now.

I think Missi spends most of the year in Birmingham barring injury to anyone.

The center rotation will probably be Theis, karlo, small ball and some Jemison sprinkled in.

Agree...I'm cautiously optimistic on Theis and Karlo. I think Theis can be a fairly even replacement for Nance,Jr, and maybe even better...IF he can be taught to shoot the 3 on about 1/2 of his shots...& make them at about a 38% clip. I might try letting Herb set the pick for Zion and letting Theis stand in the corner. Kills 2 or 3 birds...with one stone.

Someone mentioned that Nic Claxton is 6'11 215lbs. Well Trey Murphy is only an inch shorter and 5lbs lighter. We wont do this, but he could play the 5 in a 5 OUT type offense and just live and die by the team rebounding stat.
