We have enough scorers but we definitely don’t have enough shooters. Defensively, besides Dyson for defense we have Herb, Jose, Naji. I could maybe put in Trey at times. Dyson was great against SGA but again when healthy this team has more playable defensive wings than shooters.

AD said this about NAW. Where was his exponential growth? There’s not much precedent for a player going from no offensive game to having a strong one. Look at Herb. He’s become serviceable on offense but he’s still a liability there. Dyson doesn’t have much offensive game at all. He’s not even producing good open looks as a “point guard”. No ones saying he’s a bad player, but we have one of the worst offenses in the league and we have way too many defensive minded wings with little to no offensive game.

We’re top 5 in defensive rating and the second worst in offensive rating. Our defense is fine. We have a horrible offense.

Yeah I agree here. This thread is not a knock on Dyson but a fact that Hawkins is already showing he might be what this team needs more than Dyson when healthy. People talk about Dyson only being 20. Jalen Duren is 19, was drafted after Dyson and is putting up monster stats on offense and defense in his second year. If there was no Herb Jones, Naji- I would say Dyson will continue to get major minutes. But when everyone is healthy, Dyson to me might be the odd man out. I remember Willie saying Dyson needed to create an offensive identity- I know its early but he definitely hasn’t done that.

I do wonder something...

Let's say that Hawkins keeps up the hustle, rebounding, and decent D...but starts hitting 38ish% consistently from 3.

Is there a world where he starts over Herb just for the spacing?

No, there is no world where Herb is not starting on this team unless he’s injured.

In that scenario Hawk would be our super 6th man

I am assuming you are talking about with Trey out because if Trey continues on his upward trajectory I don't know how he doesn't start at some point. Trey is exactly what we are missing right now.

I'm thinking about the starting lineup. As is, you have 1 3pt spacer: CJ.

If Herb plays starters minutes but off the bench, you have 2 spacers with Hawk if he develops in the starting lineup.

But I'm also a guy that would start Trey over Herb, too.

It really doesn't matter that much, just thinking about it.

Yeah I agree with Soggy here. Herb’s D is needed in the starting lineup. Especially when BI is back. We know both BI and Zion dont really play defense. Herb helps give that lineup a much needed defensive element.

What I don't get about the people dismissing Dyson is the idea that he needs to be Good or better on offense. He needs to hit open 3s about mid 30%, and develop his floater so when he goes to the lane he has a move besides passing.

I'm going to throw a name out there that is going to give people the wrong idea, because his greatest strength is Dyson's greatest weakness, but Josh Hart. Yes he's got the kamikaze drive that Dyson can only dream of, but his career numbers are 9.8 ppg, 6.4 rebs, 2.4 assists. His shooting splits are 46.4/34.9/74.1

That's the lens we should be looking at Dyson through. Not can he be a "PG" because those initials were next to his name at one point in time, but can he be like Josh Hart, and do enough on offense to stay on the court for his defense.

Most of his offense is putbacks and beneath the rim. He doesn't have an offensive game otherwise, Drummond 2.0.

That being said his defense and rebounding was solid even as a rookie, definitely someone to have considered to 'move back and draft'.

His potential is an elite defensive anchor. Dyson's comp was similarly to lonzo, when healthy - was a plus guard. I think the fact he's been hurt we forget that

Alvarado
Hawkins
Dyson
Trey
Nance

This is your second lineup when/IF everyone is healthy.
Naji/Zeller probably your 11 and 12. Maybe Matt Ryan instead of one of those guys.

Trey still playing 30min and finishing games.

I don't think you are going to see a lot of lineups without at least one of CJ/BI/Z on the court if we are fully healthy.

That's the point of having 3 guys like that, you can keep one on the floor all game.

I guess my question is isn’t a bit worrisome that a guy we drafted in the lottery and hopefully if everything works out perfectly maxes out as Josh Hart?? I love Josh Hart but if thats what people think Dyson will max out into, I’m not really sure how much time we should give to developing him.

Trey should be the starter over Herb when healthy IMO.

Trey would be well ahead of Hawkins in this scenario. He’s primed to jump into BI’s spot if we end up going separate ways with Herb keeping his spot as the lock down wing defender.

Yeah and I don't even feel like that is controversial.

if BI would start shooting 3s at a high rate instead of literally closing out on the defender to shoot a contested middie, and you swapped JV for Myles Turner, then Herb is an ideal fit.

Currently constructed if you are JUST talking Starters, Trey is the ideal fit.

It doesn't matter a whole lot if they are both playing starting minutes though I guess.

Aren't most lottery picks about Josh Hart? Every pick can't be Trey or Herb.

But do we need to find minutes for a guy to eventually become josh hart? I guess to me its the question of spending time developing a guy on a roster you may not really need as much.
