re: Honesty: Are you ok with Griff stringing together a few singles and doubles this offseason

See my edit. Why not just sign graham outright though? Were the hornets ever in danger of matching?

Totally fine with it. Nothing wrong with getting the best guys you can now, DONT OVERCOMMIT, and stay flexibility to make a move at the deadline or next offseason.
Yep. Paul getting out of PHX was a dream scenario and Lowry was the top FA on the entire market (that your name was in the hat for until the very end.) At that point, you’re falling to backup plans. Frankly, I’m liking that they haven’t panic signed anyone yet.
Lonzo was leaving regardless, that’s clear now. You at least got something back for him.
Graham looks like a really nice player on a GREAT contract…but you had to throw the 1st out.
Still have flexibility to go after a 20M and a 10M level player. Once that happens we’ll have a much better full view and I think feel a lot better once we see the full picture.,
The only thing I REALLY didn’t like, at first, was giving up the 1st. But:
we’ve got plenty
do we really need yet another rookie added to the backlog of young players we need getting minutes
It helped keep the deal so team friendly
I did see I think Jake Madison say that sending out that 1st rounder does prevent us from sending out future picks in some capacity. Won’t pretend to understand fully, but, again, that’s the really only aspect of draft/FA that i outright didn’t like.

The past year has shown Griffin is a very bad negotiator, especially if he is panicking, which he would be if the "struck out" theory is correct

They're mad at trading the pick
If we trade the 2022 pick, then we’re in the playoffs. So I probably will say it was a good move, it got us to the playoffs. Idk the particulars of when it would convey, but we have 2 firsts plus swaps from 2024-2027.
I don’t like trading a pick, but at that point in the process, we had to do it. Graham was a must get once FA opened up and the guard market shriveled

Based on some of the comments I saw from hornets twitter and another article it seems like they for sure would have. The contract looks like a steal frankly.

Yeah we can't "owe" another team our first round pick in consecutive seasons. So until I think the 2022 draft, our 2023 first is not tradable.
That is what leads me to believe we have more in play. I don't think we give up that flexibility if we didn't know something else was in the works

I don’t agree with that at all. He got more than we should have returns on:
AD trade
Jrue trade
Memphis trade
Lonzo S&T

Yeah, every hornets writer I’ve read was complete blindsided by this move, especially after not extending an offer to monk. They only have 2 guards on the roster now

Well I hope y'all are wrong
Because if this is it I'm 100% with y'all

I'm not smart with the cap but is it possible by making Graham a S&T rather than just an outright signing they keep flexibility open? We still have the ability to add a 20M+ dollar contract plus the MLE, etc.

This is a great, more obvious than it should have been point. If we make the playoffs, who’s complaining? If we don’t, we still keep the 1st. I like that bet.

I'm not an expert either. I recommend listening to today's locked on for more details. But essentially yes I think we have that possibility now because it's a S&T

I really need to see what the rollover is. Interesting that hasn’t been leaked yet.

Do we know if the protection changes the pick into two 2nd round picks the next year, or the 23 pick will be owed instead?

short answer is yes.
because it’s a trade, it can be rolled into the Memphis deal allowing the pels to take back over 20MM in new salary
The S/T for graham (argue about the pick all you want) results in flexibility the team would not have otherwise had

Haven't seen anything on that yet. I'd assume 2 2nds

I could be wrong I'm just reading the situation as one where we struck out bigly and then had to go to plan C/D
Lowry was CLEARLY our plan A (and likely B
). It doesn't make sense that we were linked to him as a leak from another team b/c he signed at his preferred destination for basically exactly what everyone though. He didn't need leverage to get to his #1 choice at his preferred amount, and we didn't cause him to get more.
You can either see this as Griffin being some astute Jedi who created fake leaks for Lowry but really had the Graham and Ball trades ready to go and we're waiting (why? nobody can explain) for this other part or 2 to materialize in this huge, complicated S/T deal...or you can see it as we had one plan, it didn't come to fruition, and Griffin panicked.

Who would’ve known except you that if we didn’t sign big pieces, we would sign smaller pieces.
