Looking at the beginning of the year, it is obvious to me that Nelson has regressed. He went from dragging the corpses of Grant Hill, Steve Nash and Shaq to the playoffs to being unable to keep fresh guys under 22 on the court. He may be our biggest bust of the year.

Do you think athletic trainers are magic?

Players are still going to get hurt. You just want to, over time, lessen the amount and time of injuries.

No, but we had less injuries with Ocshner running the show.

Ocsner was roundly criticized by the players and their union( at least privately). for not
meeting the necessary standards of care.
It’s hard for any of us to know what’s really going on with the training and medical staff.

lowry and ibaka both got hurt the other day playing here

curry and draymond got hurt right after leaving here

There is not a trainer in the world that can prevent a guy from banging knees with another guy or the floor (what happened to Ingram).. All of our injuries have been very minor outside of Zion, who I really suspect tore his meniscus in the shoe incident and he just finally decided to say something about his knee hurting.

I guess he should’ve had Ingram doing knee exercises more? I mean, our luck is rotten. So had Golden State lately. Has their trainer regressed?

So the blender is to blame for freak accidents in other arenas

Was the blake Griffin injury during preseason of his actual rookie year here in the blender?

I know his season ender was against us. Not sure if it was home or away

Sorry but a shrug of the shoulders and chalking it up to bad luck won’t cut it.

Ten games in and every one of our starters has missed time due to injury. Every one! In 10 games!!

The story we were sold was about an overhaul of our whole approach to player well being, one that focused on preventing injuries rather than just treating them. They made big hires. They built out the facilities at the cost of millions. And this is a the return on that investment??

At a minimum—a minimum—our GM has to be up front and out front addressing this issue and the team’s dismal start. Instead he’s suddenly in the witness protection program after months of playing the hype man on every media outlet under the sun. As a longtime fan and ticket holder, that doesn’t seem a lot to ask...

It is a new approach to preventing injuries.

Knee soreness?? Previous regime you were playing through it with the likelihood of tearing something increasing. It seems now they are more focused on letting a guy miss a game or 2 for something very minor, rather than play them through it and risk something bigger

The Pels are playing at an even faster pace than last year. In Gentry’s first year here trying to switch to a faster pace pretty much every big we had got a minor leg injury early. There are a lot of new players on this team adjusting to a new pace and Gentry wants to play even faster. I have no idea why so many people think a very obvious upgrade to the training staff and investment in facilities has made things worse.

Injury prevention happens over TIME. Not one offseason and a few games.

You work on strengthing problem areas for players, identifying what their issues are, etc.

I’m afraid to type this for fear of injuring them through voodoo, but Jrue, Frank and Okafor have been fine and all 3 have played at this pace before and train hardcore for it in the offseason.

I just don't buy the pace argument.

Are extra 4-5 possessions a game ruining the bodies of professional athletes who train year round?

Do we believe the Pels, now, don't track player distance/speed data for signs of wear and tear and then communicate that to the coaches?

I'd love to read something on how much of an impact pace actually makes on player health.

I don't remember if it was in the injury expose from Verrier or just a random article on the injuries but I remember someone pointing out all of the bigs, Asik, Ajinca and even Babbitt IIRC went down with hamstrings and ankle injuries from training camp through the first month or so of the season when Gentry became coach. Gentry was asking some very mobility challenged players to run a lot.

Favors has been nursing a hamstring injury. Lonzo is out with a pulled core muscle and also is coming off an offseason where he recovered rather than trained. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that playing at an increased intensity has been a factor in some of these minor injuries. It's not necessarily a long term problem either, players just need to know what to get their body ready for in the offseason.
