Full answer from Pelicans EVP David Griffin when asked on Pelicans Weekly on @ESPNRadioNOLA about why they don't just play the young players right now:

Translation, "I can't find anyone to give me a 1st and a swap for Bledsoe".

We aren’t winning anyway trying to win. So what’s the damn difference.

Word salad. Play Kira, NAW, and Hayes, it's not gonna do anything but help their development. If we win, we win and if we don't we pick in the lottery. But at least then we'll know what the future of our team looks like

I might venture he is trying to say: “if we are perceived as an organization as not caring about winning, then the kids may become complacent and not care about winning. Even when the organization decides that it’s time to start caring about winning.”

I think he also wants the kids to work for minutes in an attempt to make them value playing in the way Josh Hart values playing. In other words if you can coast and get minutes you might continue to coast. If you are trained to fight for the minutes then you will continue to fight for them even after you get them.

You can say that this might not be the best approach, but I think his logic is sound.

Yeah that's how I read it too. I might not agree with the logic since I'd rather be giving minutes to Kira since results with guys like Bledsoe haven't been much better, but I understand what he's getting at.

What he saying isn't wrong. When these guys get their opportunity, they should play like it's their last game. If they struggle shooting or scoring, the effort needs to be Josh Hart like in the other parts of their game. Learning how to play winning ball in the NBA is tough and every opportunity they get on the court needs to have the energy you saw from Hayes last night.

I will say that Kira has a lot to learn on defense. I'm just glad he's getting to sit back and learn from watching some true professionals play defense at a high level every night.

NAW has basically logged the game equivalent of 1 regular NBA season and Hayes has now logged an season equivalent and some. That’s a decent opportunity to show any semblance of improvement or understanding of the game. I don’t wanna write em off but ya gotta flash something, anything, have at least one tangible skill to hang your hat on to be deserving of PT.

The game is much more complex than what fans believe. These two must be clueless in practice. Listening to Zion, you can tell he understands a lot of the nuances despite being so young. I think we’d see more NAW or Hayes if they could grasp the same concepts

Griff is basically saying they’re teaching these guys a lesson now that will pay off for them and the franchise in the future.

And in case you think it’s bullshite, look at how hungry Hayes was last night in the 4th.

I’m not defending Van Gundy/Griffin.

The question might as well have been “why is Eric Bledsoe being gifted minutes despite being so garbage?”

I want to win. And I don’t want Bledsoe playing over Hart/Redick-even late with how just god awful he is late in games this year. He’s been so bad, you can tell it’s gotten in his head and the teams. Josh Hart looked pissed he had to leave the floor for Bledsoe the other night. That’s not “valuing playing time”, thats “valuing winning” cause Josh Hart is not a “me first” guy.

Bledsoe vs NAW/Kira is a different question entirely.

I think it’s more likely that Bledsoe has been so garbage, why would any team even take him for free? They’re probably hoping he can get his shite together.

I’m not sure why this has been downvoted so much but he’s indeed a fricking abysmal GM. At least judging by his tenure here.

Hayes just looks dumb and clearly doesn't give a shite.

Naw actually cares and i think eventually can be a bench guy but that's about it.

Only one of these has starter potential.
One has end of the bench potential.
One will be in Israel in 2 years
