Simmons just did a fake draft with Russilo LINK

They talked about who would be left unprotected on the Pelicans. Simmons ended up taking Alvarado.

Rusillo was actually wanting Lewis for some reason. It was weird.

Who would be the 8 guys protected if this happens next summer?

That was legit confusing, he went back to Kira 2 or 3 times, to the point that BS joked about it.

It's funny, I was excited about that topic when I read the podcast notes. Then once BS picked Kenrich Williams with his 1st pick, I realized I errored and it wasn't interesting at all

Russillo also picked a dude that Simmons never heard of, and admittedly, I haven't either.

I think the pod was a dud, didn't work for me.

So it has to come down to Nance it Jose a the 8th. And I think it's a bit crazy, but I'd side with protecting Jose over Nance.

ETA: shite, just noticed next summer was the OP premise, 1 sec to fix it.

ETA2: Fixed

If we made CJ available in an expansion draft wouldn’t that be one sneaky good solution to solve our upcoming cap crunch?

CJ probably doesn’t have positive trade value at this point unless he plays a lot better this season.

The issue is, do we not also want to be as good as possible the next 2 seasons?

Giving up CJ for nothing makes us decidedly worse the next 2 seasons.

Absolutely. When he was rambling in the 1st pod he said he didn't want to stay on the NBA hamster wheel stuff(Dame/Harden trade) so he ended up with this new and terrible idea where they're debating end of rotation guys for an hour.

8. Nance/Val

Grimes and Kenrich Williams went 1.1 & 1.2.

How am I supposed to be interested in the next 14 rounds after that?

Expansion is happening in the next 2-3 years. Looks like Vegas and Seattle are getting teams.

Grimes is decent, but why the hell would Kenrich Williams go #2 under any circumstance? Lol

I'm pretty sure the team receives a trade exception when one of their players is drafted in an expansion draft. A 30+ million dollar trade exception could be very valuable.

I thought it was pretty funny at times. When Simmons took Simmons, Russillo couldn't stop laughing. The teams are probably pretty close to how they would end up, other than teams bribing the expansion teams to take salary off them. It was a cool concept.

If we extend Val it gets pretty rough and someone good could be left out.

Zion
Ingram
McCollum
Murphy
Jones
Val (w/extension)
Daniels
Hawkins

That leaves Alvarado, Liddell, Marshall and Nance exposed. Would suck to lose one for nothing..

They did a rule where rookies would be automatically protected, not counting as one of the 8 protections. So Hawkins would be auto-protected, but not count towards the 8 limit.

But they dumbly 'protected' JV over Alvarado. So it should've been pretty easy.

Protect:

Ingram
Zion
Trey
Dyson
Herb
Jose
Nance
CJ

Make available:

JV
Kira
Zeller
Naji
EJ

#8 depends on who is still under contract come next offseason. As of now, most candidates would be on expired contracts.

The one person I would intentionally NOT protect is CJ due to his salary. Dare an expansion team to take a guy making $35m.

We are allowed to cut a deal with a team for them to take someone specific, or someone OTHER than one guy, in exchange for draft or cash considerations.

Ex - If we have Kira under contract for the expansion draft, we can bribe someone to take Kira in order to pull the rest of our guys out of the pool.

The exercise is not "who are your best 8 players", it's "who are your 8 best contracts."

He's 31, at best at the top of his abilities (but likely declining) and makes $35m.

That is NOT a great contract.
