Doris Burke: Pelicans should wait

Said that the Pelicans shouldn’t do a deal now. They should wait to see if the Knicks get #1 and see what the Celtics throw on the table. Thinks it would be shortsighted to do any deal now.
Doris knows what’s up.

It's Lakers throw everything on the table to get it done now or nothing. There's no reason to accept any less than the 4 1sts they're asking.

Hopefully Dell is as smart as Doris.

I can't see the Knicks offering pick #1 for Davis. Maybe pick #4 but Zion looks like a once every ten years type of player. a more athletic version of Larry Johnson without the bad back LJ had.
They have Dennis Smith jr. and let's say they get Zion Williamson as very cheap assets.
Without trading for Davis they can have:
PG: Kyrie Irving or Kemba Walker
SG: Dennis Smith jr. ($4.4 mil.)
SF: Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, or Klay Thompson
PF: Zion Williamson (Roughly $9 mil.)
C: Deandre Jordan on a MLE contract
That team is built for now and the future. With only Davis and Irving they will still be less talented than Boston, Philadelphia, or Toronto if Leonard resigns.
Why would they trade away the two best cheap assets they have when they can pair them with any two of ten great free agents out there.
Basically they can let Durant pick his preferred teammate. If he wants Irving they can sign him outright with no trade.

I don’t know how many times this needs to be explained to you.

Lemme ask a stupid question. What good are 4 lakers first round picks if probably none are lottery picks?

quote:Exactly. I think some get excited over the quantity of picks instead of the quality. Unless you can find other teams who value the unknown future picks, they really don't have a ton of value coming from a team with Lebron and AD (and whatever other stars (i.e. Boogie) they convince to come play with them.

If their goal is to form a super team, that pick will be traded for Davis or some other pieces

To be fair, Lebron will be long retired when the last two are conveyed due to the Stepien rule. So they could be amazing picks. We have no idea what the lakers will look like in 7-8 years

I'd still assume the risk of the Knicks' pick falling to 5 if I could leverage that assumption into an extra first round pick in the deal + execute now. I think you guys are under estimating the Zion fever that will break out in NY if they get the first overall selection. Rather buy that pick now if they hedge the risk with an extra first rounder.
Agree that if KD wants to play with Davis in NY, Knicks would agree to deal the first pick in the draft to make that happen, but that's a pretty big if to count on.

If you trade them AD now they lose their motivation to lose and accumulate ping pong balls.

Nah, need Knicks to keep up the tank.
