Yea, not sure what I'm missing. How does Zo go for nearly twice as much in salary but nets a backup PG+2nd round pick to Graham's 1st rounder?
Because the hornets probably had leverage to say “hey we’ll just match the 11.5 mil a year” while the pelicans would not fool anyone if they said “better give us a first or we’ll match Lonzo’s 21.5 mil!!!”
Lonzo was already gone, so might as well take what you can. Devonte was more likely to be matched by the hornets since it was a low price

They aren’t attracting FA’s.
So what do you expect to happen?
Spend first round picks on guys like McCollum or Fred VanVleet, not Steven Adams and fricking Devonte Graham. If you’re going to blow the warchest, at least blow it on guys that are worth it

Would rather Bougknight, this is not good. Half the ppl on this message board could build a better supporting cast around Zion then this GM.

It depends on how the rest of free agency goes...if we get, say, Harrison Barnes...yes, I don't see Devonte Graham being the starter because I would want NAW to start over him and would slide BI down to the 2 for that lineup. He will still get about 30 minutes a game. Don't get so hung on who "starts"

Melt more? Lonzo would've wanted out if we matched.

Start by not giving up first rounders to downgrade your roster?
How is it a downgrade when you don’t even have a PG under contract outside of the teenager they took last year ?

Again let’s see the totality of moves. This isn’t done. There’s still cap room and MLE and BAE and other moves we can make.
You can’t judge one thing at a time.

You would rather a rookie that literally hasn’t played a single minute in the nba yet over a guy who averaged 18 and 7 as a starter. The absolute state of this board, man.

I’d feel better about it if we would’ve been able to get Portis or Olynk over here as a stretch big on the full MLE.
But damn, we have gone from having the 2nd most draft assets in the league to only a slightly above average position draft pick wise in 2 years and I’m not even sure our team is better and if it is, it’s only because Ingram and Zion are studs, not bc Griff is knocking it out of the park in free agency or trades.
Just in the past year, we passed on a deal with Atlanta that would’ve probably netted us Reddish or Huerter and pick 6 (Halliburton) for Jrue in lieu of a pick heavy deal from Milwaukee that was a bit reliant on them imploding. Milwaukee didn’t implode.
We then used a sizeable amount of assets on Adams. We kept Bled instead of George Hill in the deal and that also ended up costing us assets both ways. We extended Adams who is worth 5 mil a year to a 17.5 mil a year contract. We refused to trade JJ Redick while he still had real value. We didn’t trade Zo in the offseason or at the deadline when we at the very least could have gotten Lauri from the Bulls. We used assets to undo the Bled and Adams debacle. And as a result we had to drop from pick 10 to 17 which caused us to miss out on Moody and Sengun. I like Trey, but as a small market the only way to get a potential star is to draft them and Trey is not a potential star.
We could be sitting on a core lineup of
Halliburton
Huerter/Naw
Ingram/Hart
Zion/Lauri
Hayes/Sengun
And have 3-5 more firsts to work with for trades for your Collin Sexton’s and Zach Lavine’s of the world when they become truly available at this year’s deadline.

Still need a playmaking PG and a backup PF
Whole heartedly agree with a backup PF. Even if Hayes isn’t MIA this seasons, another big seems like the biggest need to me right now.
I think we are ok on PG with Sato and Graham. I think NAW will get some minutes running point as will Zion. And Kira is still out there but I think the Pels must think NAW is going to take a big step forward and run a lot of the offense this season.
I’m mostly just glad Lonzo is gone. If by chance Jonas really works out this season we’ll have the juice to resign him.

Van Vleet was exposed last year and a lottery protected 1st is getting you no where with Dame lol

Look at this melt.
Call it what you want but two years in a row my sense of our offseason has borne out accurate while you sunshine pumpers come crawling back to reality six months late.
This is a terrible offseason for us and we just gave up a bunch of assets to basically stand in place.
Devonte Graham is Lonzo with much poorer defense and shot selection and JV is a slight upgrade but still not a great fit.
Two first rounder and a pick swap to basically stand in place.
Remove lucking into Zion from the equation and make the case for Griff as a good GM. Go on, I'll wait....

Free agent G Norman Powell has agreed to a five-year, $90M deal to return to the Portland Trail Blazers, his agent Thaddeus Foucher of @Wasserman tells ESPN

He’s referring to Lonzo.
In my opinion we’ve upgraded. Jonas is far better than Adams for this team and on a 1 year deal. I like the draft picks. Bledsoe is addition by subtraction. I like Sato if he stays, on the bench. I like Graham for this team and like his contract much more than Lonzos.
I think by the end of the off-season we will have a better team with far more flexibility long term and healthier contract wise.
But we still have a ways to go.

I can tell you don't watch much basketball outside of the Pels...JV is a huge upgrade over Adams. Lonzo is one of the worst on ball defenders in the league. We getting back a guy who shoots the 3 well at a high usage for much lesser contract...

To be fair Kawhi Leonard is still out there....

Damn. 5/90. That’s a great deal for him.

Guess what? If we suck we get the fricking pick back.
That's not how it works. It usually just falls to the following year without protections. The full protection language is important.
