Can't find a bit of information I heard (or thought I heard) from Griffin interviews.
Paraphrasing: I want a fast paced, high IQ team. Then later mentioned a big who makes plays??
I vaguely remember it being Indiana's Sabonis. He called out the name. Sounded like an endorsement of sorts.
Not trying to be lazy, but does anyone remember what I may have heard??

He mentioned wanting high basketball IQ players and lots of ball movement (in his introductory press conference IIRC). I'm not sure about the playmaking big, but that would play into the ball movement desire.

But why trade brown for sabonis?
Sabonis is def a solid player and def hustles and has an all around game but brown has a much higher ceiling.
If brown actually puts it all together watch the fook out.

Issue is next year is when all the shite contracts come up and teams will have money.
Some team may decide a 16PPG, 46/37/70 (assuming improvement) very athletic high ceiling wing could be worth the max and become a star, then you'd have to match it. He might just be an otto porter at best. While Sabonis you should be able to keep for more like 20mil a year.
3-team trade:
Boston sends out Tatum, Brown, Smart, and Baynes with 2 picks
Boston receives Davis and Moore
- Why would they? They need to shed $$ to match for Davis, but they also get to keep a pick and get back a quality rotation SG. Kyrie re-signs and they need flexibility. They're also high on Williams to give some minutes as well. Low key issue though, they need to get scraps to fill out the bench.
Starters: Irving-Moore-Hayward-Davis-Horford
Indy sends out Sabonis, Holiday
Indy receives Brown
- Why would they? With their commitment to Myles Turner, they shouldn't invest that much money into another big. Swapping him for a wing like Brown gives them a young budding wing to put in the lineup to grow with Oladipo and Turner.
New Orleans sends out Davis, Moore
New Orleans receives Tatum, Smart, Baynes, Sabonis, and Holiday (along with 2 picks)
- Why would they? Pelicans know they cannot hold onto AD. While doing so, they are going to get a king's ransom and the perfect partner would be Boston (assuming we can't get zion/Ja).
Realistically, Brown has a higher ceiling, but his floor is also lower than Tatum's. Keeping both would be nice, but they'd be dreadful in the front court as it stands. Insert Sabonis, a lanky big that can improve his shot, not a liability at the line, decent defender, and overall someone who wouldn't likely break the bank to keep. The Boston parts are obvious and getting a 2nd Holiday is always nice to make your "franchise player" happy. Don't forget underrated defensive backcourt of Smart-Holiday and a viable 15MPG big in Baynes.
With #7, they select White

SG: Holiday/Smart/Holiday
SF: Tatum/Williams/Miller/Hill
PF: Sabonis/Randle/Wood

Can't tell you how much it bugs me that Rachel acts like Ainge is some next level genius all the time. Have the RESULTS of his trades been lopsided? Sure, because of luck or other factors after the fact. But he didn't "talk GM's into bad trades" like Rachel seems to imply.
Let me give you an example. She mentions Colangelo. That is the Philly trade.
If I were to tell you that Team A traded the first overall pick for the 3rd and the 14th pick two years later, who would you say won that trade? The team that got the 1st pick by a LANDSLIDE, right? Well, NBA history would back you up. The 1st pick is historically worth the 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 14th picks.
But Philly takes the wrong guy and handles it poorly and now Ainge is a genius? It doesn't work like that.
Ainge also trade to give up 4 picks, one that would eventually become the 3rd overall in order to move up and get Justice Winslow. MJ says no because he is obsessed with Frank Kaminsky. But yeah, Ainge is a next level genius. Not lucky.
The Kyrie trade has produced a better player for sure, but one who could leave after playing in two total playoff series and winning one. The team was definitely tighter and more cohesive prior to his arrival. But sure, I will mark it as a win. Thats fine.
Point is that she acts like this guy is playing 4-D chess while everyone is playing checkers. She makes this point about him all the time. But in reality, this is a good GM who had some great luck and/or the teams who traded with him had some really bad luck after the fact. He is not somebody that you should be terrified to deal with, as Rachel always seems to imply.

Biggest thing they gloss over is offering 4 1sts for Winslow. It’s never mentioned in his trade history.

I agree in general that Ainge is overrated because he got lucky, but I think the Philly trade shows skill. Just like Atlanta valued Trae more than Luka, Ainge valued Tatum more than Fultz and had a good enough feel for the Lakers that he knew he could get who he wanted at 3.

Agreed. He has been VERY lucky because some teams are outright idiotic.
Brooklyn for example.
He's a good talent evaluator (or has a system that is good)... But the trades he loses when it comes to the numbers. He wins because he optimizes the picks
