This isn't "Yay Zion for doing what you should have been doing." This is "Thank God he's finally responding to CJ holding him accountable."

We'll see what he looks like after the ASB, but if he hasn't lost much stamina it gives you hope that he's turned a corner.

I've been beating the drum all season on Zion only averaging 30 minutes per game.

Found some interesting stats on Twitter.

quote:

His per 36 numbers, since 11/20:

26.8/6.2/5.9, 64.5 TS%, 27 Usage rate

Players to hit 26/6/5 per 36 numbers > 61.9 TS during that stretch:

Giannis
KD
Jokic

Even in knowing and complaining about the minutes and talking about Zion maybe not being a top 30 player, I never thought that maybe for the last couple of months Zion actually is producing like a top 10 player when he's playing but the biggest thing holding him back is just not playing enough minutes?

I’m a chief grosser about restrictions with Zion, but if the scheduled off days and 30 mpg through the first half result in a healthy Zion playing 35-37 mpg in the playoffs I’ll tip my cap to the pelicans.

For that to happen, Zion’s minutes do need to start ramping up over the next 20-25 games he plays down the stretch.

Shel, thank you for looking this up. I have thought that his lack of minutes are what is holding back his stats. Unfortunately, I think it’s holding the team back. Hopefully, those mpg trend towards 36 post ASB.

I’m honestly cool with the minutes and occasional back to back sit downs if this is what gets him to the post season healthy

This is what I hoped they would do before the season, because pretending like he’s a regular player has never worked.

Think back to the season that Toronto won the title. They managed the shite out of Kawhi’s mins, usage, and games played that season.

Obviously Zion has a lot to prove to even be half of Kawhi, but I believe that is the playbook that Zion and the Pels are attempting to tap into this season.

Earlier on in the season, he couldn't really even do 30 minutes -- at least not on both ends of the floor. He recently said that he feels like he's at 93%.

I would add that Zion's poor defensive ability this season has resulted in opponents hunting him in matchups. In some cases, this has meant that Zion has gotten in early foul trouble.

I don't really want the team to try to increase his minutes right now. For at least the next 10-15 games, I hope we focus on improved play in the minutes that he already gets.

That is asking for trouble imo.

Either way, we need to know if Zion can handle carrying a team, so the 30mpg isn't really helping imo.

You know Zion is going to come back after a week off overweight and out of shape again. It’s a damn shame. Dude could be generational. I hope he proves me wrong.

Exactly him getting more touches in his minutes mean more than playing a few more minutes.

I have lower bowl tickets to the Rox game Thursday. I'll get some photos up. I'm only a few rows up.

Message from a friend of mine:

My buddy played golf at a private course on Kiawah island over the weekend and bumped into Zion in the clubhouse and he was teeing off on 1 when they went off on 10.

Kiawah Island is in South Carolina.
