Chris Paul confirms he spiked 2011 trade that would have sent Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to New Orleans

One of the modern NBA’s great what-ifs is what would have happened if then-NBA commissioner David Stern didn’t spike the trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011.

As it turns out, an even bigger one was sitting in the shadows of Paul’s trade market.

As documented in the book “The Victory Machine” by Ethan Strauss, the Warriors reportedly attempted to acquire Paul from the New Orleans Hornets that same winter.

?

The price the Warriors would have paid? Two young guards by the name of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Such a trade is unthinkable today with the benefit of hindsight, but the deal was reportedly almost done, until Paul stepped in.

How Chris Paul killed a Splash Brothers blockbuster trade

An excerpt from the book, via NBC Sports:

The Warriors attempted to trade Steph Curry and Klay Thompson for Chris Paul in 2011. It was far from the only time Curry was shopped, but in this instance, the deal was very close to completion. Myers made the offer and Hornets GM Dell Demps was receptive. The catch was Chris Paul, who wanted out of New Orleans but had no intention of playing for the woebegone Warriors. Paul told the Warriors they could do this trade, but he wouldn’t be staying when his contract was up at season’s end.”

Exactly. You can request a trade without being a bitch about it and fricking over fans that supported you for your entire career to date.

I do wish I could go back and find the thread announcing the Lakers deal. I would love to revisit my melt.

Let’s be honest, Curry and Klay wouldn’t be anywhere near as good in NOLA

I stand by my frick Chris Paul statement. He is the bitch poster boy who started the "I only want to play in LA or NY" bullshite that holds franchises hostage. That little dumb frick netted us Eric Gordon and scraps, when we could have had a much better deal. Again, frick him, I hope his knee blows up and I am excited that he and I will both end our NBA careers with the same number of rings.

Saw an interview with him posted on twitter yesterday where he said the reason he did not want to sign an extension with the Warriors was that he did not want to go to the west coast as he was an "east coast guy." Did he not realize the Lakers and Clippers are on the west coast?

The thought of the 2012 Hornets medical staff dealing with Steph Curry’s fragile ankles is horrifying. Chris Paul saved Steph’s career by blocking that deal.

Also frick Chris Paul.

Sure it sucks, but imagine being mad at Chris Paul for not signing an extension with the Warriors so the Pels/Hornets could get Steph/Klay.

We never could have had this trade because he was never going to re-up with GS, so no, this is not a trade we could have had.

The idea that Paul is such a bitch because he didn't help the Pels/Hornets out by signing an extension with the Warriors is laughable.

He never refused the trade, he even stated they could do this trade. He would then fulfill his contractual obligation with the Warriors.

He didn't refuse to be traded, he didn't say he wouldn't report. If he did those things, then yea, that would be a solid point. But he didn't so it isn't.
