I was listening to NBA radio yesterday and they were discussing AD. Everyone was pretty much in agreement that if you have AD as the best player on your team, you will not win a championship, simply because he doesn't have that "dog" mentality in him like a Westbrook/Lebron type.

I have to agree with them, he doesnt seem like the type of leader a team needs to win a championship. He flashes that potential, but it's like he cant sustain that mentality for a full season, or even a full month+.

With that said, would it be best to cut bait, get a GREAT haul for him while we can, or try to bring in someone with that "dog" mentality to push him (that was the biggest loss with Boogie, and I think we lost that opportunity when we lost out on Jimmy Butler)?

AD is great, he has everything a team needs to win a championship. He needs a playmaker to set him up because he draws the attention of so much defense. Wide open players need to knock down wide open shots. This offense is stagnant with the loss of Elfrid. Frazier does a decent job, but he's too small and a defensive liability. Jrue is a true scorer-defender but he's turnover prone when you ask him to be a playmaker. Every big man needs a playmaker unless you handle the ball and shoot like KD.

AD can not be the best player on a title winning team. He could put up the best numbers in a series for a team that wins a title. But he won't be THE guy. His best case scenario is that you put him in a scenario like KD is in Golden State, where Steph is the one opening everything up for others and is the most valuable player, Draymond is the dog on the team, Iggy does a lot of the leading, and then KD throws up the big time numbers and wins Finals MVP.

AD would need all those other things from other players to ever win a title. He can't carry a team to one the way Dirk did or even make one a quasi contender as the #1 guy the way Kawhi did or Giannis is doing now.

Would you say Duncan was the best player on the spurs championship teams?

I think he can but the 2nd best player needs to be an aggressive scorer.

If he doesnt have the talent level to elevate an entire team, then what's the point of holding on to him? Trade him now, get a haul back of good players, and make ourselves a deep team like the clips, Raptors and Celtics.

IMO the assets we would get back from an AD trade would make this a better team than keeping AD. A few examples I think would make us better:

AD to Philly, Simmons, Chandler, Fultz and 2 1sts to NOLA

AD and Hill to GS, Klay, Draymond, Cook to NOLA

AD and Hill to LAC, Gallinari, Harris, SGA to NOLA

And my favorite

AD to LAL, Ingram, Ball, Kuzma and KCP to NOLA (KCP is rerouted to Philly for Fultz)

You need to lower your expectations on what we will get back from AD. They ain't getting all that.

To answer your broader question: Ticket sales. That's why you try to keep him. They are not great now, but watch what happens to the sales when you lose AD.

AD creates an illusion that your team could be great. As I have said forever, this team will NEVER win a title. Never. But you trick the casual fans into thinking tickets are worth buying if you have "name players"

Westbrooks dog mentality has not won them a championship. So he cant do it on his own either.

Lebron didnt do it until he got help either. A good bit of help. Lebron can lead a team to a championship better than AD can, so im not saying that.

If you put Jimmy Butler on this team, and you won a championship. Butler would have been the player that got you over the hump, not the main reason you won. AD would still be the better player and the main reason you won, Butler would have just given you something that you didnt have before.

Winning will draw more fans than anything, even with AD the more we lose the less fans we will draw. I would love to keep him AND be able to be a contender, we just need him to step his mentality up, not necessarily his game.

The only one I see on this current team with the mentality we need is Julius, I'm not sure the others would follow him though.

Someone pushing AD is what we need though to bring the best out in him. Just like last season when Boogie went down when he went to AD and said " If you won't play give me your Achilles and I'll do it". That lit a fire under AD and led to what you seen after the ASB. That's what we need.

I hope you understand how bad your Westbrook argument is.

A fire must have oxygen to be a fire, but that doesn't mean that wherever there is oxygen, there will be fire.

Pointing to Westbrook not having won a title as some sort of evidence that champions don't need a killer mentality is poor logic.

Every player with a dog mentality doesn't win a title, but you aren't winning a title without an elite player with that mentality on your team.

I would put AD's mentality on par with Klay. Nice kid. Very talented. Cares about winning for sure. But he aint rounding up the troops and going to war. He isn't going to be sick to his stomach after a loss like CP3. And I have personally never seen a guy like that be the undeniable best player on a team that won a title.

At this point, I will be surprised if AD ever wins an MVP and I'd bet against him winning a title unless he is on some sort of super team like KD

I tend to agree unless he is teamed with another star like a CP3 or Butler who just rides his arse nonstop until he develops some edge (could also break him).

I still think it will take more than that. With that said, maybe if he gets with Lebron by next season he can win one. Lebron is a different level. Outside of that, if I were his people, I would try to get him to Philly with Embiid and Jimmy. I don't think he'd ever win an MVP in that scenario, but maybe he can get a title or two.

Your 2k dynasty team is great in 2025.

So basically you want last years shitty Lakers team and a guy who may or may not have the yips.

You’re a moron.

That "shitty" lakers team was almost a playoff team despite being highly inexperienced. Add Ball with Jrue and we have the best defensive backcourt in the NBA. Kuzma, Niko and Randle gives us a young but good with the potential to be great frontcourt, and we get a player in Ingram who is a legit 3 point threat and plays decent defense.

The best part? We are a VERY young team that as we age and get better, they have the potential to be a top team in the NBA.

And, you get a former #1 overall pick who if he doesnt pan out doesnt really cost you anything, but you could also hit the motherboard by taking that slim chance he does.

If the Pels don't win the lottery post trade then the best player you get will be via the trade. So really what people should be looking at is who do they want their best player to be.

Ben Simmons
Jayson Tatum
Brandon Ingram
