So what's our next move? Or will we just wait until the draft?

I'm also gonna call BS on 247, because they were floating the idea that we should take Andray Blatche's dead weight contract on in another deal....
Can't have it both ways...
This way, Washington can STILL amnesty Blatche... and we maintain ours if Jack needed to be cut loose....

If we draft Meyers Leonard
I would be a fan of this.
I don't think I want Batum at $10m+/yr. Young, solid player that can shoot the 3 pretty well, but I don't think that he's going to be worth what he ends up getting paid.

I think we should start watching a lot of Meyers Leonard film...or keep an eye on Chris Kaman...

@hornets247 For those of you asking for trade for trade grades: Hornets get a C, Wizards get an F. Both teams would have been better off using amnesty
FWIW - McNamara only gave the Hornets a C because it wasn't the best option available. Hypothetically speaking, the Hornets could have amnestied Okafor and traded Ariza for a second round pick to a team in need of a wing defender. Doing so completely clears both players' salaries from the cap without taking on the Rashard Lewis buyout (I'm hearing that's $13 million or so), which does go against the cap. I'd give it about a B; not a C, but not an A if we're going to realistically weigh it against all other alternatives.

love your work on Mad Men, bro

If we amnestied Okafor and traded Ariza, wouldn't Benson still have to pay Oak $28M or whatever the last 2 years of his contract is minus whatever he was claimed for? This deal saves Benson a significant amount of money.

I feel like Demps would've done so if people were willing to trade for Ariza. I would think Ariza's been on the trading block since he got benched for Aminu, but no one thought he was good enough to take on his salary. Plus, like someone else mentioned, it still helps us out for the 2013 free agency if we don't make a splash this year.

Yes. Probably would have cost Benson around $16-18m to do that. But, as mentioned, the Hornets already probably shopped Ariza quite a bit and didn't get anyone to bite on him without getting back an asset or our taking back a smaller bad contract. This trade very well have saved us more than the hypothetical "amnesty Oak/trade Ariza for a pick" scenario simply because the latter may not have been possible.

like they have been trying to do for awhile now?

Exactly. It's not like Michael McNamara is more knowledgeable about NBA cap machinations than Dell Demps, who studied under the Spurs for a handful of years.
I'm willing to give Demps a pass on the bad CP3 to Lakers trade because he was trying to save interest in NOLA and didn't have Stern's knowledge of a white knight waiting to save us (Benson). Demps was operating under "must be respectable now to live up to the promises made under 'I'm In' campaign".

Where's your proof? We heard Okafor rumors, but never really Ariza. I find it hard to believe that zero out of the other 29 NBA teams would have taken Ariza for a 2nd round pick. I mean, for goodness sake, look at the trade the Wizards just made with us. Your proof is right in front of you.

So you (having been privy to exactly NONE of the inside discussions between the Hornets and other teams, not to mention discussions between Demps/Benson/Loomis) are saying that you'd have cut a better deal than Dell Demps.
Not mocking, but let's call a spade a spade. There are a lot of horrendous GM's in the NBA but I don't think Demps is one of them (CP3 to LAL trade notwithstanding).

Especially when compared to our previous GM. The fact that Jeff Bower is being considered for other GM jobs is baffling.

it that wasn't my intent to imply that. I wonder if Benson possibly just didn't want to fork out the cash it would have taken to amnesty Okafor, and preferred this Lewis buyout option instead. Could very well not be the case, but it's entirely possible. Just trying to see the scenario from both sides.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of this trade. Just trying to explain the rationale for not giving it an "A" rating.

$16-18 Million is a ton of money, I don't care how rich you are.

What owner would want to fork over 28 million instead of 13?
This deal is better in some ways than amnestying him.
