The classic case for Tyreke improving his jump shot is simple. First, it's clearly the weakest point in his game - he shot 22% from beyond the arc last season and shot about 25% from midrange. It's also one of the easiest to work on in the off season. Becoming a better passer is tough - learning how to identify open cutters at NBA speeds isn't something that's easy to do alone in a gym. Making jump shots is, however, and it's something that Evans has been much better at in the past. Evans shot almost 34% from three in his last season in Sacramento and converted about 33% of his mid-range shots. If he could improve his shooting percentage from those areas, it would be a huge boon to his offensive efficiency.

In addition, becoming a better shooter would improve the Pelican offense. The biggest problem with playing Tyreke with Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday is that Evans needs the ball in his hands to be a valuable contributor on offense. If he could make 35% or more of his threes, Evans would keep defenders closer to him around the three point arc, opening up space for Holiday and Gordon to penetrate. If he were a threat to catch and shoot, defenders would have to mark him closer. He could be used on weakside picks to cause distortions in the defense or could be a decoy in plays, making him valuable without the ball in his hands.

Thought you guys who discussed the McNamara article would like this one too. I thought it was a solid rebuttal and both made good points.

Good rebuttal. I fail to see how Evans improving his jumper is a bad thing whatsoever. How can adding a weapon to your arsenal hurt? It doesn't mean he has to fall back on the jumper rather than go to the rim or pass.

It's not whether it helps his overall game or not. It's about him settling for it if he's hitting at average rates. In a vacuum assuming equal time, would you rather tyresus spend the time digesting hours of game tape and understanding the drive and kick/pnr with AD better or develop a jumper?

I think Mac's point is a legitimate one. While adding to your arsenal can't hurt, relying on your new found skill at the detriment of what you do best naturally can.

If Lebron can work on his jumper, so can Tyreke.

I think it's necessarily the case that he'd "settle" for it if he can drive.

I don't think he's limited to one or the other.

Lebron may have confidence issues but he is a much more capable shooter than Evans has ever been even early on in his career. Lebron's percentage may not have been high early on in his career but the sample size was there to say that he can develop a capable shot and that's what happened.

Looking at Evan's stats up to this point, I just don't see him being a respected shooter anytime soon. He may have some years where his efficiency goes up but he'll will probably unlikely be a consistent theat with his shooting habits.

As a starter he was a much better shooter. Also kind of hard to judge his shooting this past season since he never got big minutes when the other core players were all healthy.

Saying that someone should try to improve their shooting is kind of obvious though.

Someone needs to stand behind Tyreke with their hand in his back while he shoots jumpers, all offseason. Stop him from fading away.

The majority of the jumpers he misses come up short. I think eliminating that unnecessary fade in his jumpshot would help a lot of his problems.

Him having a jumper/outside shot makes him that much more dangerous. Similar to having AD knock down those jumpers this year vs. last.

being a 1 trick pony just clogs the lane for everyone. Him being able to space gives AD that much more leeway, not even including the benefits to EG (if he's here) or jrue.

I think it'd just make him so much better off ball, which would be huge, especially with Holiday and (but hopefully not) Gordon playing with him

I see no reason for anyone to not develop a jumper, it's then up to the player and coach to be smart enough to not rely on it. I mean if you can make a jumper that just changes how the defense is going to guard you.

But despite the grotesque numbers, somehow, quietly, Evans continues to influence games in a positive way for his team. And the one skill-related weakness powerful enough to exile talented guards from the league has barely slowed him down at all. This, as much as his highlight reel plays, is what makes Evans so fascinating and frustrating to watch. The fun part is just how dazzlingly he gets away with it all.

you're welcome
love the classical...excellent writing there

i agree with mcnamara on this one
evans need to get better finishing. as many times as he gets to the rim, he finishes at a belwo average rate. get that rate to above-average, he'd be a triple-double waiting to happen every night, and would strike fear from the top of the key. evans is a guy you surround with shooters, not try to turn in to a shooter

To me its not about turning Evans into a jump shooter, its about giving him a jump shot. Him being able to make defenders at least think that he can make a jump shot doesn't just open up opportunities for the team, it makes it easier for Evans to get to the rim.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. Who could possibly disagree with that?
