I have a very strong suspicion that neither Noel nor Shabaaz will make much of a splash in the NBA long term . Could be wrong, but I really feel that way.

I think Noel turns into a Dwight Howard type player (not saying he will be that good) who dunks, blocks and rebounds with no real offensive presence.

Howard was 35 lbs heavier and a year younger entering the draft. He is a big body down low that defends the post beyond blocking shots. At 205 lbs, Noel has a long way to go before being anything close to Dwight on defense.

Dwight also has solid post moves. No, he doesn't flash a midrange game, but he has several solid spin moves and can use one dribble to get around big bodied defenders, which makes him a major mismatch at center. Maybe Noel can develop that kind of footwork, but to say Howard has no offensive skills is not right. The guy scores 18 ppg for his career (12 as a rookie).

I'm liking Noel less and less as time goes by. He just has so much going against him coming in to the league. He's way too skinny for a center, is coming off a major knee injury, and has no offensive game right now. I think he would've been better off staying at Kentucky another year. Then again, next years draft is much deeper so maybe he didn't want to risk falling down the boards too much.

Noel next to Davis would be awful. I am not a Noel fan at all, and the two would just not work together. I see Noel as a Larry Sanders (the bucks player, not the other Larry Sanders) type guy, and he's too similar to Davis and not as good at anything.

As for Len pushing talent down the board...wouldn't him going higher be taking talent off the board?

If Porter falls, I'll be happy. If its Oladipo or Noel...ug.

Gil would be pissed if he missed out on it... He'd be sitting at home watching games making endless Nerlens puns.

I would. Len does not impress me, where as Saric may have the must upside in the draft, were he still in the draft. I hope that I am wrong and we draft Len and he is the next zydrunas ilgauskas.

The worst tragedy of making that pick by far.

Two years ago when I heard about Nerlens I wanted us to pick him just for that.

I'd agree that I wouldn't be ecstatic about Noel, but I would fricking love having a Larry Sanders caliber player next to Davis. I think the odds are against Noel being that good, though.

quote:

The study found that Sanders is the NBA’s best interior defender. Against Sanders, opponents make just 38 percent of close-range shots. The study also introduced a new stat called proximal field goal percentage, which found that opposing players shoot just 34.9 percent when attempting a shot within five feet of Sanders. That’s the lowest proximal field goal percentage of any frontcourt player.

LINK

I get that it would leave us very thin in the frontcourt, but if you're getting that kind of defensive impact, frick it.

If you're going Noel (which I seriously, seriously doubt), then you've GOT to get a scorer at 3, and you've got to have a 1 that will run. You'll just have to be a small ball, run up and down the court team.

I meant his game looks like Sanders to me, not that he'll be as good as him.

Wait, what? You wouldn't want Larry Sanders to play center for the Pelicans?

Why?

And for the record, Sanders averaged 1.6 more rebounds per game and one block more per game playing nearly identical minutes to Davis. If you want to say Davis projects to be better in those areas then that's fine, but right now Sanders is better than Davis in those areas.

Noel has outstanding passing ability for a big man much like Joakim Noah to go along with his rebounding and defensive presence inside.

If we don't land Iggy, I have a feeling it's gonna be Shabazz.

And Davis averages 3.7 points more, 14% higher from the line. 4% higher from the field. 0.5 more steals per game. All as a rookie who battled a couple of injuries. Davis will probably surpass him in rebounds and blocks next year. Dude was a 19 year old rookie for most of the year. Sanders finally saw it click in his 3rd year.

Also, there's only so many rebounds to go around with Davis on the floor. It's not that we would refuse a Larry Sanders for the hell of it, but he's not a great fit next to Davis.

Sanders is 5 years older than Davis and been in the league since 2010.

And would I want Sanders on the team, hell yes (again, I only meant to say Noel will be a defensive player, not that he will turn out as good as Sanders). Would I want him starting at Center? Um. Can he play Center full time on a high caliber team? He's 230 lbs. I see him as a defensive Power Forward, personally.
