I'm kind of shocked by the amount of people who think what this team has done this season is acceptable or that they're headed in the right direction.
The team is currently in the playoffs, have 2 All-Stars, developing chemistry, and have players that actually seem to want to play in New Orleans. You're shocked that people find this acceptable.
Many in this fan-base are ridiculous. Many Pels fans pride themselves on being rude and indignant, then expect good results. It doesn't work like that. You never hear of a player wanting to return to New Orleans, maybe the fan-base will be satisfied once the team leaves.
When Monty took the team to the playoffs, he couldn't even bring his family to the arena and was booed. We won't mention how happy Ben Simmons was to put Louisiana in the rear-view. Wasn't someone heckling Boogie at a home game the other day? Now, to hell with making the playoffs, fire coach. Seems very goofy.

this is the problem, i think.
what exactly is the potential of this team and how realistic is that best case scenario?
do some really see 50 wins as the expectation? how many of those actually watch NBA basketball on a regular basis?
this is a middling team boosted by two top 10 talents playing very well.

Potential should be higher than 8 seed

Dude c'mon. The things we are critical of (turnovers, effort, etc...) The coaches and players are of as well. We aren't saying anything they aren't. At some point when you get beaten by bad teams more than what you should people will question coaching. None of this shite should be unfair to address.
I really question what you think you see when you watch us play. It's too inconsistent. That means we play really well for stretches then we forget what got us there and play bad. It why fans get pissed.

If they were to bring their A game every game, which never happens for any team in the NBA, I'd say they easily have a win total in the low 20s right now and would be fighting for 4/5 positioning rather than 7/8 positioning.

Wouldn't you say that would be within reach of the best case scenario of this hypothetical team coached by a magical coach that got perfect effort and execution out of them more often?
To me the biggest problem with expectation is what coaching can do for players with "mental flaws". Boogie has always been inconsistent at best. AD rarely takes over a game like he's capable of. Jrue has never been aggressive enough. But the new and improved "any coach has to be better than Gentry" will fix all of those problems because if even a lowly fan can identify the problem it must be easy to fix for a real professional coach.
I'm not saying no coach could improve the situation, I do want change in the offseason, but it's got to be the right coach and he needs to be paired with a GM that's completely on the same page. Like if the new HC wants to bench Cousins to get more out of him, the new GM needs to back that up.

if they win 45 games and miss the playoffs did they fall short of potential?
what if they win 42 and get the 6 seed? did they reach their potential

If they miss the playoffs yes they didn't meet expectations.

Alright man, if you're happy with this being a .500 team then I'm not going to ruin that for you. All I'm saying is if you have Anthony Davis, Demarcus Cousins, Jrue Holiday, etc you should be better than average. Much better. But if you're happy being average, all the more power to ya.

We've blown big leads and have lost games to teams we have no business losing to. Team doesn't play with consistent effort
This pretty much explains it.
If this was all we were capable of, I’d be happy with simply making the playoffs. But I’ve followed the team more this year than ever before. My son and I have season tickets, and we watch every away game on tv (except for a handful of games we’ve missed while traveling). I’ve seen what the team can do. I’ve seen us come back from 20 down to win games. I’ve seen how we look with ball movement.
It’s frustrating to see us abandon what we do while Gentry seemingly does nothing to correct it. To watch us resort to AD or Boogie iso ball while the other big stands there watching. I like our roster, even with so much dead money on the bench. I 100% believe that this roster is capable of a 3-4 seed with better coaching. There are maybe 4 or 5 teams in the league who I would trade our roster for (there are a few more who might be a little better than our team, but who I wouldn’t enjoy watching as much as a fan).
And I know the players have to be getting frustrated. With a loss like last night, I inow how much it eats at me just as a casual fan. I know how angry I felt losing meaningless sporting events as a kid. I can’t imagine what these guys feel, knowing they are capable of so much more. Do they blame themselves? Or do they blame the coaching and start giving up. Every time I think we are turning the corner and are about to make a serious run at the 5 seed, we shite the bed.

We are currently in the playoffs
I'm happy that the team is moving in the right direction. Watching AD and Boogie play together makes me happy. I'm happy the team is relevant and in the playoffs. I'm happy with Jrue and Moore's play. I'm happy we signed Rondo and Miller. I'm happy that Solo will return this season. I'm happy the Pel's have the draft picks and assets necessary to make trades to strengthen the roster this season. Whiny bozos who bitch and rant blindly don't make me happy.

Being 50-50 is about what I thought with this coach and the injuries...

Me too, very puzzling. It's like they haven't watched any games.
Maybe this team goes on a hot streak and proves me wrong but I think what we've seen is what we'll see the rest of the year, and underachieving team that finishes about at .500.

What injuries? Solo? Your 3 best players have played almost every game. Your getting phenomenal shooting from moore and Miller. Being .500 is not what i expect from this team , and its under achieving. They should very, very easily be 20-16.
If they finish the season 42-42 with AD, jrue and cousins missing minimal time, that would be disappointing.

Wait until hill has 6 or 10 games with the team.
From then on they should be formidable.
Moore off bench.
Won't have bench to deal with Houston or warriors, maybe not spurs...
At least they will win a couple in.playoffs.

I don't know why you are getting downvoted. Vegas had us at a 39.5 win total to start the season. We are currently a .500ish team. We will mostly beat bad teams and mostly lose to good ones with a few random outcomes thrown into the mix.
Now maybe we have the talent to be better and maybe they still turn it around somwewhat as the season wears on and Solo gets back, but the professional (not fan) expectation was a sub-.500 team.

Because just like Kushner said in his article, the team is selling 2 superstars in their prime and people expect more than .500 ball from that.

DeMarcus Cousins today said the #Pelicans have struggled with "a lot" with consistency.
"We play the right way three games and play the wrong way for four games. We need to find that consistency and be OK with being a boring team who plays the right way every night."
This is the 2nd time Cousins has equated playing the right way with boring. I'm not going to say he's never going to get it, but playing the right way needs to become habitual, not be seen as a chore.
