Today was also Lakers media day. Here are some notes and quotes. As you'd expect, everything is sunshine and roses.
quote:
Westbrook characterized offseason conversations with LeBron and AD:
"Very beneficial. Being able to talk about and understand things we want to do, and how we want to do them."
Also said convos/building a relationship with Darvin Ham has been "extremely important to me."
quote:
Anthony Davis said he's had great conversations with Darvin Ham that have mostly revolved around defense. "He wants us to be one of the best teams in this league defensively." They've gone back and forth with suggestions, ideas, and exchanges of knowledge.
quote:
Darvin Ham on if Russell Westbrook is a definitive starter: “We’re a ways away. We have several options.”
quote:
Patrick Beverley says that Russell Westbrook has been his best friend with the Lakers over the past 4 weeks.
quote:
Patrick Beverley said that Russell Westbrook gave Beverley’s sister tickets for courtside seats in Houston to watch him play Beverley and that was a turning point in their relationship a few years ago.
quote:
Kendrick Nunn: “It’s been a long process. But I think it’s been going good, going great. … The process has been slow. … I feel real good going into the season.”
quote:
Rob Pelinka says that the Lakers will do everything they can to improve the roster — including trading first-round picks — because of the commitment that LeBron James gave them this summer by signing an extension.

quote:
Anthony Davis told ESPN he plans to have a chip on his shoulder this season, channeling the same approach he brought to LA in 2019-20. The Lakers have training camp T-shirts that say “CHIP” across the front, a little double entendre for their mindset and motivation.

AD out 4-6 weeks with a chipped shoulder

I hope people don't still wonder why we've been telling everyone for years that AD will never be the #1 option on a title contending team.

quote:
Allie Clifton: "Any personal goals for you going [into this season]?"
Anthony Davis: "As much as I can, play all 82 [games], and then get back to the level of basketball that I know I'm capable of playing which is being elite and dominant."

Beverley said he didn’t know if the Lakers had the “will factor” required to win last season. That’s clearly a major point of emphasis for him, leading the way in that sense.

Late to the schedule party, but just read a note on the Lakers having the least amount of back-to-backs this season. The league really wants Lebron and L.A. to be relevant again, no way that schedule benefit is on accident.

I don’t think it will help much.
LeBron’s getting older and Toni is a pussy. And their supporting roster is one of the weaker ones in the league simply because they are leaning heavily on young Klutch guys and a few supporting pieces like P Bev.
That locker room is so combustible that, if the wheels fall off early, it is going to be a long season for them.
First ten games include ones at Golden State, Denver, and Minny as well as home games against the Clip Show, Denver, us, and Cleveland.
The least talented teams they play in the first 10 games are Portland and Utah (twice).
They potentially go 1-6 before they get to Utah.

Darvin Ham says he was been going with LeBron, AD, Russ, Nunn and Damian Jones in the first unit thus far in camp
That team is getting smoked

They want a peaceful camp, so they'll keep Westbrook in the starting unit until the season starts.

I will never ever understand Davis. It just doesn't make any sense. He should legit be the best big man in the league. He has that level of talent. He should be better than Giannis. He has more talent. He just doesn't get it. His pure obsession with being a PF is just dumb. So damn soft and he is rewarded for it. James needs to get rid of him.
I saw a piece of Derozan's interview. If the Bulls struggle as much as they probably will, will Derozan be on the market? What if the Bulls wanted to clean house? If the Lakers come to the Bulls and offer Davis, Westbrook, Nunn and 2 future 1sts for Ball, Derozan, Vucevic and Caruso. Do the Bulls turn that down?

Would the Lakers trade for Ball with him potentially being permanently injured?

If I'm the Bulls I make them take him, to get the other 3. Gets him off the books. That is the sweetener, along with the future 1sts. Bulls would open cap space for next year. I don't think they could get under the tax, unless they could release Westbrook and spread out the remainder of his contract somehow. But would be under for next season with the ability to pickup a solid FA (20Mish type of player).
Bad thing for the Bulls is they have to land in the top 4 to keep their draft pick. Having Lavine healthy is going to make that tough..
