With the Mitchell trade done, could the Jazz still bail out the Lakers? Westbrook, 2 firsts to Utah for whoever?

Video commentators say that the Mitchell deal taking place without Westbrick involved means two possibilities.

1. Westbrick plus two firsts to Indiana for Buddy and Turner

2. Westbrick starts the season in LA

Forgive my ignorance, but could the Lakers offer Westbrook and two firsts for Markannen and Clarkson? Maybe Bogdonavic instead of one of those?

Jeanie Buss has been clear that she isn't giving up two picks unless it's to acquire a talent that would make the Lakers contenders this season. Giving two 1sts for Kyrie could, in theory, have done that.

Getting other teams' castoffs isn't going to make the Lakers a contender.

best case scenario for us is that the pacers hold firm and get the lakers to make a desperation move in February (after they’ve floundered and pressure is mounting). They can be patient, the lakers cannot

they could also go after bogdanovic and Conley (?) I guess. Hopefully ainge has a want to make the lakers squirm, you know he wants those lakers picks which would ironically be better picks than any of the ones he has traded for so far

If the Lakers and Jazz were going to do a trade, why didn't they wait and do Beverly (plus other throw ins) for Westbrook?

Seems like they lost THT and Johnson for now reason if they are trading picks now..

This has the potential to be epic.

P Bev brings them some stuff they need but that mouth of his entering a volatile locker room could be fun, in a good way for us.

lakers SBN blogger
quote:

The team’s fascination with 2023 cap space is a little odd, considering they won’t have enough money to chase a third max player, even if the Lakers clear the books of everyone but LeBron and AD. They’d have to once again fill out the roster with minimum contracts and deprive the team of any potential continuity for yet another season. We’ve seen how challenging it is to build a team with minimum players and how much the Lakers suffer by cycling through role players year after year.

If the Lakers don’t want Conley and Clarkson for basketball reasons, there are fair arguments to be made there. But excluding them from consideration to play the free agency game, when no max free agent has signed with the Lakers other than LeBron in recent memory, seems foolish.

The Lakers are trying very hard to set low expectations for the trade market this year, and this is one more constraint they’re artificially applying for any potential deals. The front office can’t say they’re working to optimize the remainder of James’ career and then not attempt to surround him with playoff-worthy role players. Bogdanovic would be a start, but the Lakers still have a lot of work left to do this offseason.

So absent a Westbrook trade, the lakers depth chart entering camp is roughly:

Westbrook/Nunn
Beverly/Walker
James/Reaves
Davis/Gabriel/Juan Toscano
Thomas Bryant/Damian Jones

That’s a mediocre team over 82 games. Turning Westbrook into two decent rotation players could make that team a middle seed in the playoffs, but it’s just really hard to see anything above a 6 seed given the current state of the West and what is a realistic Westbrook return.

And if either James or Davis are hurt for significant time this team is swapping out of a top 10 pick.

I just can’t see Beverly and Westbrook playing together. If they do it’ll be great television

swapping out being a thing is a wild change. love it.

I'm waiting to see a swap in a trade where the 18th pick is swapped down to 38th. your first and meh player for my second plus my good player.

I just read some stories this morning that the Heat are considering Westbrook. Riley has a history of reclaiming players. They could send out Lowry and Robinson (get off two semi bad deals)..

I hope the makers do that. Get stuck with two terrible clothes tracts for a washed up dude and a guy who peaked in the bubble

That would be an amazing deal for the Heat. Signing Lowery was a huge mistake and the Robinson contract is almost as bad. Dump those two salaries to bring in a guy for one season who might actually fit the culture fairly well

Puts them in great position to get impact free agents in 2023 while still contending in 2022

That’s the thing. Westbrook isn’t the problem. He busts his arse but needs to be held accountable and needs guidance. He has 0 quit in him. He would do well playing on a scrappy, hard nosed heat team.
