re: 2021 Lakers Thread

That trade would have been infuriating. Wall and Westbrook are a wash, so there would really be no point of the rockets making the trade without getting assets back. I would think Wood would be the best piece in that whole deal. Unless the Lakers were planning on sending Reeves + the few picks they have left in this decade, the deal would make no sense other than a boost for the Lakers.

Supposedly that was the sticking point and why the deal fell apart.
Lakers ultimately didnt want to give up yet another future first rounder, one that almost assuredly is after Lebron or AD's timeline, just to appease Lebron's short term mentality that could give a frick about the Lakers prospects as a franchise after he's gone.

or, the Lakers will hold firm and not bend over to Lebron(doubt it)
I'm not so sure, not acquiescing to LeBron at the deadline was a big change in strategy. I think Pelinka realizes his window with LeBron has closed unless some unexpected blockbuster trade becomes available. I think they know an ugly end is coming and Pelinka is trying to protect himself.

the buss kids and the rambii (along with magic, phil jackson, etc) will all rally around the lakers/pelinka when that happens

The rumor around the deadline was there was the outline of a deal revolving around Wall/Wood for Westbrook + young pieces and a pick(Lebron signaled he was pissed the Lakers didnt make the deal)
That's the right move.
Would a team of:
Wall (who knows if he'll injure himself AGAIN)
Davis (ditto)
LeBron
Wood
beat the west and then whoever comes out of the arena with the east?
Then you have to attach picks? LeBron is only gonna be around for another couple of years and mortgaging the next 5 years is stupid. LeBron has proven in his career he will not 100% commit to a team he joins for too long if things don't go perfect and the projection of the team is up near the end.

I said on the other page I think that deal, realistic best case scenario(meaning I'm not assuming AD and Lebron suddenly turn into iron men, or Wall turns back the clock to Washington), gets you maybe the 6th seed.
Maybe, maybe if they hit health at the perfect time they can be a tough out, but I'm taking a healthy Suns/Nuggets/Clippers/Warriors over them in a 7 game series easily. So second round team under a best case scenario?
So i get why the Lakers, who are not as deep pocketed as people assume, are like, nah, we aren't sacrificing our income and the next ten years of our team to give you a marginally better team next year.

I read that before about the pick but didn’t realize wood was involved. I thought Lebron wanted them to send Russ and a 1st for Wall, which would make sense considering there is no need for the rockets to make the trade. I would think Wood himself would fetch at least 1 1st.

Westbrook has played 73 games this year. John Wall has played zero. Say what you want, but good luck making that swap and thinking the end result would be any better. Not even getting into Lebron and Wall being a year older.
And oh yeah, their second best player Malik Monk is a free agent.

Adding another toxic personality like Wood to that bunch would be hilarious.

I mean I dont even think most Lakers fans at this point are feeling good about the pathways they have any more, and they live in a perpetual fantasy world where everything will conspire to help the Lakers(and there is typically some validity to that).
Personally, I think the Lakers should blow it up, but they'll move deck chairs around on their Titanic again and Lebron will be gone the following year

lakers will be favored in only one more game (OKC)
if they are in the top 10, they will have ZERO draft picks in 2022. the pels can swap for their 2023 1st. their 2024 1st can be taken by the pels or the pels can defer to 2025 and take it then. their 2024 2nd is owed to MEM and their 2026 2nd to CLE.
leStat is a FA after next season.
SHITSHOW

1-10 goes to Pels. Outside of top 10 goes to Grizzlies.
It's basically the unprotected pick they sent us, but we traded that pick top 10 protected to Memphis, at least that's how I understand it.

Can someone school me on tiebreakers with the Lakers?
Is it this below...
- The tiebreaker for playoff seeding starts with head to head, which we have over the Lakers, so for seeding purposes we're basically 1.5 up on the Lakers right now
- But for draft pick purposes, H2H does not matter and if we finished tied with the Lakers(assume we both miss playoffs) it's just a coin toss to decide who gets the better pick?

Yes, for Playoff/Playin purposes, traditional tie breakers are used. For draft positioning, since they'd be in the lottery, a coin toss is used.

Yes, but the flip only applies to the regular draft position. If there's a tie, then both teams get the same number of ping-pong balls for a top-4 pick.

Meaning he is unlikely to play in Dallas or Utah...but may vs us.
