I think the modern catalog of prog rock is some of the finest we've had

Songs like This Armistice by TREOS or The Difference between Medicine and Poison Is in the Dose by Circa Survive are two examples of greatly layered and complex songs with great lyrics. The former about the mind trying to control the body without involving the desires of the heart and the latter about writer's block

Didn't expect to see them mentioned in here. Anthony Green's side project with the Rx Bandits is another really good one. It is what finally got me past Anthony's vocals, then the production that Botrill did on Blue Sky Noise cemented them in the rotation.

Can anyone name some recnt or current bands of the prog scene?... talking 06-current. I have struggled lately to keep up with the progressive genre, prog metal more specifically but I like any GOOD music(not country).

Circa Surive and Fair to Midland are ok, not my cup of tea. I haven't really heard anything new from them so I am speculating.

Fhak 30 seconds to Mars

The other bands in the list, are they similar to Circa Surive and Fair to midland??

hmm

well they are both very different from each other and they cover a lot of ground in a couple of genres.

Are you sure you like prog rock?

TREOS is its own animal and is highly addicting if you like true prog rock. I'd recommend following along the lyrics because they are amazing

Not really. I love bands like Mew and Sigur Ros, so high isn't the problem. It's the whiny sound that bothers me. It's a lot worse on their older albums, but I really feel like working with David Botrill taught them how to use his vocals properly. Then again, I think David Botrill could make a pack of howling dogs sound like the Philharmonic.

gotcha. Yea it's funny that Saosin has parted ways with a couple of lead singers who don't sound alike but equally divide listeners.

Another person whose roots aren't really prog, but has definitely swayed that way in his solo work:

He said he was more a fan of prog metal vs prog rock. I'm in the same boat really. I love prog metal, but there are very few prog rock bands I like.

oh me too. Which is why it surprises me he didn't really dig Fair to Midland. Those guys have a pretty heavy sound with plenty of prog elements.

Secret and Whisper is a bit on the hard side as well
