Also,
although not entirely prog, White Denim is a really good newer band that has some great prog stuff. Get their albums 'D', and
'Fits'. Out of Austin.

I don't particularly like progressive rock, but I love progressive metal. FYI Dream Theater falls into the progressive metal category; not prog-rock.

Not a huge fan of prog rock but I've always enjoyed Devin Townsend's work. Check out some of his solo work for straightforward prog. Ziltoid the Omniscient is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years. It's a perfect mix of metal and prog. I was a huge fan of his metal band Strapping Young Lad but they broke up a few years ago.

Hello, my fellow Hevy Devy fan. The Devin Townsend Project albums have been in regular rotation since they each hit.

I have a hard time distinguishing between some of these genres. Seems some alternative rock is the same as progressive rock IMO

Mmm I'm not sure I agree with that. The Mars Volta sounds nothing like Nickleback.
If you are considering Radiohead to be "alternative", then I could see your point. However, I'm not sure I would consider Radiohead alternative with the exception of their earliest work.

This is why a lot of "progressive" artists hate the classification. It's basically used by the ignorant to describe any music that isn't written in 4/4 and includes a guitar.
Look at a recent band like Fair to Midland. They are hard rock, but they also have strong prog influences. Or a band like Opeth. Are they metal? Are they progressive? How about progressive metal?
What about Hum? Space Rock is definitely a subset of prog.

I don't think progressive metal is a bad category for Opeth.
The genres while far from perfect do have some value.

Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and Mikael Akerfelt of Opeth are working on a project together called Storm Corrosion. I think it comes out in May. Some of you might want to keep an eye out for that one.

Now that sounds intresting. I am huge into Porcupine Tree and was able to see them live at Voodoo in 07' I believe.
A short and broad description of the 'progressive' genre can be define as just being "different"
To each his own...
Tool is for sure Progressive metal, but lacks a true defenition because, what does the msuic mean to you? At least thats how I understand it.
A bunch of bands named in this thread are what I consider progressive.
YES, Tool, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, King Crimnson, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Opeth...
It really is not too easy to define, but we all know it when we hear it.

I think this could also be used to describe "alternative." I always viewed progressive as metal fusion, but some people classify other forms of rock as progressive with little metal influence.
Opeth would definitely be progressive metal IMO.

Well technically progressive rock came first, then progressive metal. Progressive rock traces its roots back to the 60's as a spin off of psychedelia rock.
Progressive Metal came about in the mid to late 80's with Dream Theater giving the genre teeth in the early 90's. Dream Theater was to progressive metal what metallica was to thrash with kill em all.
Progressive Metal was what happened when kids loved Pink Floyd and Metallica then decided to play both albums at the same time to see what happened.

In retrospect, most people didn't give a lot of thought to these sub genres until the late 80's or early 90's. I still don't but to each his own.
