What label do you put on bands like My Morning Jacket or Flaming Lips?

See I'm 40 and I get set in my bands and it takes a lot for me to stray. There's a set of bands like those you listed, Mars Volta, the Strokes, Arcade Fire....those types that I've never really listened too. I'll try those you listed today.

Flaming Lips

prog

This one gets me. Some of their stuff is definitely prog. Listen to some early recordings and they are punk, among other things.

MMJ...same problem. Definitely rock. Sometimes country/southern rock, sometimes prog.

Labels suck.

Battles is a really good newer prog band. Been listening to them again a lot lately

Cool, I'll try them too. I have no way really to find bands I may like other than sampling iTunes, which rarely works for the type of stuff I like.

You'll get over that. I used to stick to ONE set of bands. It was my own locked mind. One day I decided, "F**K that! If I like it, I like it!" Then, I couldn't afford all the music I like....until I discovered sites around the globe our government is now reaching out and touching.

Yeah not very effective listening to a 60 second clip of a 23 minute song to see if you like it. :)

I have tried. Maybe I didn't try enough. Just never clicked with me.

Battles is the shite. Ian Williams is one of the best, most influential guitarists of the last 20 years, yet nobody knows who he is. Gloss Drop is a fantastic album, but I would have preferred to see them live when Tyondai was still with them.
