This. Can you imagine some of the collabs he could have had if he had been alive? Not to menrion many more years of his solo music would be incredible

Dying young may have amplified his fame, but it has nothing to do with his talent or his impact on the industry

I'm torn on this many way to look at it. If he had lived it would be very likely that he music would start to be "different" and the people that liked his stuff he known for know would be turned off by him. Dying early allows everyone one to think what might have been which helps the legacy

Most artist do most of the work their known for in the first 5 years or so If Clapton had died in the mid 70 would he still be an icon?

No because we don't know what could have been. Since we don't know I think his legacy is amplified

I think it is fair to ask what would have been his evolution as an artist. When he died, he was a good deal better at being awesome at playing the guitar than making writing awesome songs.

Eric Clapton was also better at being awesome at the guitar than writing awesome songs. And, as it turns out, Eric Clapton is still better at being awesome at playing guitar than writing awesome songs.

Which is why I don't think either guy is the best guitarist ever. The goal isn't to show off your chops. The goal is to use your chops as a means to an end. The end being awesome songs. Maybe Hendrix could have learned to do that. Maybe not.

depends
If he lived and continued to produce music as good or better than what he made in his lifetime, it gets even greater.

If he lives and then never produces anything as good as what he had done prior, than he would not have as great of a legacy.

Dying young always increases legacy. His legacy would not have been any bigger.

You think the Beatles legacy would be as big if they stayed together 40 years? No. They broke up in their prime so we never saw them sell out or decline.

We will always remember the Beatles for being at their best. Same with Jimi. Same with Morrison.
