Even in his 4 or so short years on the scene, people still realized the impact he had on music and how special he was. Listen to the stuff recorded but not released before his death. Unbelievable things would have followed.

This.

You don't get to see him age and skills deteriorate.

Elvis. John Lennon.

They both at least made their 40's. Did not hurt their legacy.

You think the Beatles legacy would be as big if they stayed together 40 years? No. They broke up in their prime so we never saw them sell out or decline.

We will always remember the Beatles for being at their bes

Perhaps but if he hadn't died I imagine he would have floundered in a downward spiral of drug addiction and would have become an even greater cautionary tale.

Absolutely. Look how many great rock and roll musicians started young like him and are still performing.

Perhaps he would have reinvented himself over time, as Eric Clapton has, to become a blues/rock elder statesman. That, as opposed to other musicians (Steven Tyler comes to mind) still wearing wild clothes in their 60s and trying (failing) to keep the look of their youth.

An interesting thought is the impact his living might have had on SRV's career, since Stevie may have had a harder time getting acceptance of his covers of Hendrix songs with Jimi still around. Who knows? They may have collaborated like SRV and Albert King with it being a huge success.

His legacy would have been great just for his art before he died.. had he lived longer, he probably would have gone thru phases ala Miles Davis, continuously exploring. May have led to some high points and not so great stuff. He was already starting to explore jazzed out arrangements and instrumental stuff before he died. It would have been interesting, that's for sure!

Looked all over for a Beatles "U mad" meme and couldn't find one. Glad there is one that exists though
