this is actually a pretty decent question..since the CDB originally was more southern rock, and knew marshall tucker band, the allman brothers and everyone else around from the south around that time period. nobody posting in this thread but chitter chatter has probably ever listened to any songs other then the 10 songs from the CDB greatest hits album. if you ever have a chance to watch charlie shred the fiddle live you would appreciate him more.

I'm a big charlie daniels fan. I watched him shred his fiddle on stage with Widespread Panic and loved every mind blowing second of it however stating that he and Duane Allman are musical peers is just foolish.

And yes-they were a kickass band,some of their stuff bordered on a sort of country prog that would never make it past a braindead A&R man today. Not sure I'd put em up against the Allmans but it's a chance to

Having said that, I acquired a bootleg of the CDB from 1975 and I was blown away at how good they were. very similar 'allmans-style' jamming throughout the whole show and super tight. They were right there with them back in the day. Charlie went another direction with his music in the late 70s and early 80s.
anyone ever seen Leonard Cohen - Live at the Live at the Isle of Wight? That's a very young Charlie Daniels sitting directly behind Leonard, just to the left in the pic

To say the least. When he remade Long Haired Country boy with bowdlerized lyrics, my respect for him went out the window.

Then there's the whole "Murica frick yeah" vibe. He's found the demographic he wants to appeal to now. I'm not in it.

I would say charlie is a better musician
He a great fiddler and can hold is own with most on guitar and I think i remember seeing a thing on him playing banjo in bluegrass bands in the 60's
I know Duanne is considered one of the top guitar players of all time if not the best slide player ever
I like both bands I just think playing 3 different instruments at professional level would make him the better musician (if you could put ranking on music ability)

Read "Skydog" and then tell me your opinion hasn't changed. The depth of Duane's musical knowledge was amazing. Even Gregg couldn't keep up with him when he started talking music

I'll go with the balance toward country rather than rock like the ABB. CD is a great fiddler but DW is in the pantheon of greatest lead guitarists ever. I would say CDB gets commensurate respect but they just weren't as popular.
I'll throw out Marshall Tucker Band as a closer to ABB nominee. Their success was prolly proportionate to their talent though.
