We live in an era where mediocrity is celebrated, 2nd place trophies are adored, and simpletons are made out to be heroes.
Simply this, people these days are dumb as dog shite, and settling for a lesser product is A-OK.
Top 40 Country panders to the lowest common denominator, and hooks them in because "Hey, I sing about small towns(you live in a small town), I like to drink a cold beer(so do you!) I sure do like cruising in my truck(WEEHOO TAILGATES YAWL!)"
Simply this, people these days are dumb as dog shite, and settling for a lesser product is A-OK.

I would imagine if you could look throughout history, the simplest things in form would always probably be the most popular

Maybe there is something particularly bad or overmarketed about music that is currently pop and on the radio. I don't pay very much attention to it, and it is difficult to gain perspective on it anyway. It does make sense that the level of marketing and oversaturation is greater than it could have been in the past due to improvements in technology.
Something to keep in mind however is the selective memory of events. This applies to most things. People are going to have a tendency to remember the good from the past and forget much of the bad and what you get is an overly grand sense of the past.
The time periods that people compare are also not equal. When you cherry pick out the good from a couple decades and then compare that to everything from a period of 5 years, then of course the best of decades is going to look better.
Conclusion: The majority of pop music has always been crap. People have always complained that pop music isn't as good as it used to be.

It's all catchy hooks and beats, there is no thought into the lyrics.
I swear all that was played on radio during the summer was get lucky, blurred lines, and lil wayne. The worst part of all is that people think it's good music

I was joking about the Phish, but I have such a long list of stuff I need to listen to that I don't have time for pop radio. The only time I hear it is if I am at a bar.

Pretty much what I meant as well. And when I'm out at bars I usually mentally block out whatever is playing through the radio. 
Pop music really is just the tip of the iceberg. Once you figure out that there's a whole mountain underneath the water, you can get lost forever.

It pretty much has been that way since I can remember... In general, music that is made for the mainstream is crap... there is a reason why it has a limited shelf life and then is forgotten about, cause its crap...

I think a lot of it has to do with the decline of the popularity of rock/alternative music. This synthesized sound has taken over pop radio.
Lumineers and Mumford are considered pop rock. Huh? Good sound but that's not rock. Completely different sound from what pop rock used to be.
