Why is mainstream, popular radio music so terrible?

Because most purveyors of "popular, mainstream music" are not musicians, can't really sing (with a few notable exceptions), and know nothing about the music that came before them.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that alternative/rock music is not the popular genre right now.
At least back in the day you had bands like Soundgarden, STP, Bush in the mainstream.
But now, it's just this bullshite Katy Perry crap that all sounds the same. It's like these artist don't even try, and why would they if the shite sells and they make a ton.

to be fair, Katy Perry is much better than a lot of the pop princesses that came before her. Not saying she's doing anything that great or interesting, but compared to like Xtina she may as well be Sonic Youth.

Because pop culture rules, more than ever. Listen to the crap played on radio today, it's nothing tub somewhat melodic pop culture references.
Songwriters are upper middle class to rich suburbanites who understand marketing, but have no soul. People seem to have lost imagination, the ability to dream. Radio stations found out they can appeal to suburban and urban teenagers and make more money.

True, but it never used to be this bad. Popular music now is just a giant blender if the same sound.
Might be because of the type of people actually making the music, as you stated earlier.
Hopefully this sound disappears and rock/ alternative becomes popular to the masses again.

I enjoy most of it. But don't listen to the radio much so not sure exactly what's on it.
I like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, some of the EDM tracks on the radio like Zedd's Clarity and Wake Me Up by Avicii as well as Zedd's stay the night with Paramore's Hayley.
Looking at the iTunes Top 10 I like The Monster by Eminem/Rihanna, Counting Stars by One Republic is great, as is Demons by Imagine Dragons.
And the current #9 track, Let Her Go by Passenger should be #1 worldwide it's so good. God I love that song.

Corporate America is the ultimate reason IMO. Most everything that is produced and sold through corporations is dumbed-down, mass-produced crap. Everything from the services we use to the food we eat to the movies and television shows people watch to the music on the radio. Quality means nothing and profit means everything. And 90% of Americans will never even question the bullshite they are consuming.

in most markets, the broader base of consumers have fairly simple tastes. Successful marketers understand this and build products to meet the need. Just look at the top beers in the US. Why would anyone drink Bud Light with all the great beers out there? How are Red Lobster and Olive Garden successful?
I have an associate who fits this to a T. He likes Top 40 Country, drinks Bud Light, pours A-1 Sauce on a Filet Mignon, thinks the latest iOS upgrade is the best thing to ever happen to him, etc. Nothing really wrong with it, just a difference in tastes.
