You could go back in time and the rock that you are praising would be talked about the same way as the modern pop that you are condemning. Then you could go back further and you would see people condemning jazz as uncouth jungle music. And on and on.

You're probably right, but I'm in the boat with Spaulding in that the shite that is out now is complete garbage and is null in void of any kind of effort. It's a lot shittier than it used to be. It is processed music that is only made for money.
I understand pop music is made for the masses to buy, but frick, its really bad right now. I don't ever listen to the crap, but I feel its so bad right now it has to be discussed.
The Grammys celebrate today's music and give out awards to the artists and I hate most of/ if not all of it.
Its just odd to me that as a big music fan I can't stand the music that is celebrated by so many people. I'm open to most sounds, but the stuff on pop radio is unbearable.

The death of pop music was Britney Spears and that whole generation of pop music.
When it was discovered that the only market that matters is dumb rich white 12 year old girls, pop music pretty much died
They've been making pretty much the same exact song with pretty much the same exact marketing strategy (which is all pop music is) for like 15 years now, just making it progressively dumber and sluttier over time

Meh. It's more complex than all that, and it really goes beyond the scope of this thread, although the ideas are related. I'll just leave it as things aren't all doom and gloom like every older generation has always said about their succeeding generation. There certainly are dynamics that are worth discussing, but it isn't anywhere near the "grr, get off my lawn" attitude that is being presented here. It's mostly myopic vision that leads people to these conclusions.
And pop music has always been dumbed down for the masses for as long as it has been used for trade. Something with general appeal has always had to be relatable to the least common denominator. Maybe later I'll try to find some absolute garbage from the 60's and 70's to post to use as an example.

Plenty of people think '70s disco and '80s hair metal is pure crap, but I generally like both genres. I am admittedly a sucker for bright synthesizers and wah-wah guitar solos.

The entire idea of a music or movie award show has always been absurd. Judging art and trying to determine how art ranks in a general sense could only be foolish. Art is personal and will mean something different to everyone. I don't need these music "experts" to tell me what I think sounds good.
