Jerry Cantrell the goat. Saw him a week ago which makes this post a week late, but man…wish I had been born a few years earlier to pack up my bags and move to Seattle for that time.

I think you answered your own question, but I legitimately have no idea.

Saw Jerry last year and I agree what an amazing musician and clearly much of the creator for AIC.

I saw them open for Van Halen at Lakewood in Atlanta in 1991. Feel lucky to have seen them live with Layne Staley. But it was before Dirt and Jar of Flies.

The window to have seen them live, playing their best songs, must have been microscopic.

Yes, the players have to be great but there must be great songs. AIC delivered great songs even when they had 2 disabled junkies in the band. A lot of talent in the right place at the right time seems an obvious recipe, but there it is.

Jerry doesn't get enough love in GOAT discussions. He's not a "shredder", but for that era when you combine his contributions as a singer as well, his playing and songwriting, he was certainly comparable to legends from prior eras, notably Townshend.

A unique sound with lots of droning and vocal harmonies. Many songs about pain and despair that alot of people can identify with. A naturally talented primary singer in Layne Staley. Even in his deteriorated state for the Unplugged show, he could still effortlessly belt out his lyrics.

Never understood the love. The only song that my ears don't hate is Don't Follow. Some of the vocals in other songs just hurts.

If you dont like the hardness of it just listen to their unplugged.

I dont know how anyone can listen to that and be like, this isnt good.

Staley was handled by the same vocal coach as The Wilson sisters and Geoff Tate.

Staley and Cantrell together were magic. It was a very unique sound on the heels of the party decade..

IMHO, this is so important for real success in music. Don't do the same old thing. Be different. No matter which genre you are trying to break into.

I always liked them best of the Seattle bands.

This year Soundgarden is up for the HoF and people are saying they should get in but no mention of AIC.

IMO Alice in Chains were way more influential than Soundgarden.

Haunting melodies and lyrics done with precision, stepping outside the standard heavy metal box that was trending speed-metal and shock-value at the time, and slowed it down significantly so you didn't have to be on meth to digest it.

That seattle scene was wild, it was all non-mainstream but all those bands were so different. Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, Pearl Jam, nothing alike at all.
