Dude, do you even Bach?

Seriously, he was said to write all of his music to glorify God. His is some of the most complicated and beautiful of the Baroque era.

I wouldn’t confuse the Jesus pop they play in churches with religious music.

We need some talented Musicians to come to Jesus

The talented musicians can make more money writing secular music and performing to a wider audience. Those of lesser talent who can't compete in the mainstream have to resort to a niche genre in order to find an audience.

Several months ago I discovered my wife was cheating on me. We wound up splitting but the kids wanted to live with me. Anyway, I really tried listening to a ton of contemporary christian music, to keep me inspired and moving in the right direction. After about three weeks I concluded that it all sounds pretty much exactly alike.

I couldn't take it.

I see clear channel as the biggest barrier.
Every other station is broken out by sub-genre (Alt-Rock, classic Rock, pop, New country, country legends, etc.). For some reason, "Christian" radio is just a vanilla pitch to the soccer moms. All inspired types of music are abandoned, and there's no commercial reward for breaking a mold or pushing a boundary musically. If you are writing thought-provoking melodies over interesting chord progressions, that almost immediately precludes you from making the rotation.

What if Vaseline from STP had Christian lyrics? Never would hear it. What if The Distance from Cake had Christian lyrics, or Lights Out from Royal Blood?
It's not rewarded because it's off-center.

It's terribly patronizing, honestly.

2 reasons for me. One, it feels forced in most instances.

Two, and most importantly, it feels disingenuous to make money and gain fame off of God.

Sorry to hear that, and yeah CCM is probably just going to discourage you more because it's pretty awful

Listen to good music and advance your faith via other means, maybe

It's definitely forced a lot of the time

And while I'm not interested in going to bat for Christian artists, most of them are pretty unknown and probably don't exactly rake in cash

I'll concede to that.

When I was in HS, 2 bands made their name off of a few hits. DC Talk and Jars of Clay. DC Talk's "Jesus Freak" was an abomination of a song.

The only one I know of today, their songs don't even sound overtly Christian. I had no idea Thousand Foot Krutch was a Christian band. They've got more than handful of good tunes.

Kinda out of the scope of the discussion - unless he plans on leading worship at my church anytime soon

Because they aren't largely focused on that. It is less about the music and more about praising God. The majority of the music you hear in the genre is the real heavy handed stuff. When it is subtle and the artist cares more about the music, it is generally some good stuff.

In the words of Hank Hill, "you're not making Christianity better, you're just making rock n roll worse."

what about bands like Red,

Red - Breathe Into Me

I'll think of more but I love bands like these. The struggle and the faith combined, it makes for great workout music.

oooo this is a good one too by them,

Red - Pieces

Christians are pretty "narrow minded" so you can't play them anything different or they would reject you. So contemporary christian bands have to just regurgitate chord progressions and melodies that these people have already heard.

Many christians are narrow minded, but not all of them. I think the type of person to listen to religious music is probably not looking to broaden their horizons. Instead they are looking for comfort, so they pick something they recognize and doesn't challenge them.

Considering 70%+ of america is christian, and there is amazing music out there, there is a lot of christians that are open to new and different types of music.

My sister is a minister, and very religious. She is quite open minded about music. On family vacation in April, she jammed out to Caribou.
