Why does “pop music” get such a negative connotation?

Would you agree that pop music, largely, gets a bad wrap. Why is that? In your opinion, is it justified?

What are some examples of groups, pop artists or albums that you enjoy?

For me, Sting is largely considered a popular musician. However, he’s one I really enjoy. Here’s a cut from his new album. This is certainly a “pop song” in my opinion. Sting - Rushing Water

Because pop music is not considered artistically interesting or challenging. It is made for the most general consumption to maximize revenue.

It depends on the pop artist. Sting for example has put out quality stuff. Billy Joel is a thoughtful songwriter despite the amount of grief he gets for being so poppy. Even Lady Gaga puts out some quality because she is versatile as a singer. Harry Stiles does a good job and even though she is not my favorite, Taylor Swift puts thought and time into her music

So much of pop today is crap though with hacks doing music like Lizzo or Bieber and the like. Beyonce sucks. Ariana Grande sucks despite having a set of impressive pipes. I do have a soft spot for Anderson Paak though

Most pop songs are pretty damn generic because the record label knows it will sell well to their main demographic which happens to be teenage girls. That’s not to say that all pop artists are terrible most are at the least talented when it comes to singing but that’s only a part of it. Record labels don’t like taking chances for the most part so they pay a few dudes to write songs for a girl or dude that has a poppy voice, throw on some catchy beats then call it a day.

I will say we are starting to see some genre blending with some of the biggest names in the genre such as Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Ellish both incorporating some version of rock into some of their songs.

Eh, there's good pop and fluff pop.

There have been some really good pop songs, and some awful ones.

Not all music needs to be substantial, sometimes it can be fun.

A lot of people find value in being "different". They don't want to be associated with "the mainstream". Thus, anything that is popular is "bad" in their minds. The reality is that the mainstream is just a small plurality of music listeners. Some pop music is great, and some isn't. Being popular doesn't make it bad, just well-known.

I think most people find that pop music is generally inoffensive and is all wrapped up in a little box and topped with a bow. The "good pop" and "fluff pop" is a great reply. Pop music really isn't what I listen to most of the time (look at my handle name ) However, in my opinion, there are some artists out there that are putting out some good stuff for that genre, like Sting, Haim, Cut Copy, Sam Smith, some of U2's newer stuff, Bombay Bicycle Club, Fun, Coldplay, Dylan Hartigan, and so on.

Absolutely. Sting is actually a great example. Great music with The Police. With very few exceptions, pop-crap as a solo artist.

Because it’s synonymous with sell out, and over sound engineering, and silly nonsensical meaningless lyrics, posers, bubble heads, and overall stupid stuff.

It’s not 100%, but it’s close enough that it evokes negative connotations for many, especially those who love and really appreciate music as an art form.

Pop music used to be created by an artist or a band. See The Beatles.

But, particularly in the 80’s, pop music began to be created by teams of people assembled by record companies. Beyoncé has had a song with 15 credited songwriters. Makes it perfect for mass consumption but crap for people who like a more grass roots vibe to artistry.

Completely disagree. I saw an interview where he really provided good insight in his solo work vs. his work with The Police.

In a nutshell, he felt like they (The Police) where at their ceiling. There really wasn't much more, if anything, they could do and/or achieve. They were a punk/reggae band that ended on the top. Sting wanted to do a lot of other stuff - i.e., folk, jazz, pop, soul, and his solo work, largely, has been that. I mean, his first album he worked with Darryl Jones, Omar Hakim, Kenny Kirkland, Branford Marsalis...that's an amazing lineup of jazz musicians. If you really listen to and sample his solo work, sure, you'll recognize the main hits from the radio, but the other 90% of the stuff is pretty interesting...pretty challenging, unique work.

Nonetheless, it's just interesting that one genre of music - pop - just automatically warrants a negative connotation (and I'm not implying that it isn't justified). At the end of the day, I think it largely based upon the individual group or artist. Michael Jackson? Prince? Sting? Probably pretty damn good. Justin Bieber? Ariana Grande? Probably pretty shitastic.

generally, if the artist either plays an instrument and/or writes the songs he/she gets more respect from me. You won’t see me spinning Gaga or swift but they both play and they both write and therefore are legitimate musicians

I would not. Pop music is largely uninspired, tepid crap designed by record labels for the lowest common denominator. Is there some decent pop out there? Absolutely, but it's an exception.

Because those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s when "pop music" could be anything from Stevie Wonder's Superstitious to Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall to John Denver's Take Me Home Country Roads to Earth, Wind, and Fire's Shining Star to Queen's We are the Champions to Simple Minds Don't You Forget About Me want to shoot lasers out of our eyes when we hear the last two decades of pop music that has consisted solely of putrid prefabricated dreck targeted and marketed solely for teenage girls.

That’s incorrect. Google “Tin Pan Alley.” The Beatles ushered in a new era by writing their own music. That wasn’t common before.
