Creedence never had a #1 single, and they were the biggest selling band in the US for two years -- yes, outselling The Beatles.
I've seen similar claims about albums for The Tijuana Brass (remember them?), who were very popular before the album market exploded in the late '60s (thanks to the Fabs)

Let me rephrase this for the only two down voters

Because at some point you can simply have had enough of his gender bending trans make believe.

He just wasn't as big in the US as he was in the UK, that's all
Yeah he was/is huge in Europe, but big in the States.
And for Lets Dance, SRV was Plan B. A guy named Danny Gatton was the original choice but suffered from acute depression/alcoholism and when Bowie tried to contact him he was on an extended bender and couldnt be found.

I hadn’t heard this particular story about Gatton but not surprised. By all accounts he was a fantastic guitarist, considered one of the best around among guitar aficionados all over the world. Mostly stuck to playing gigs in the DC area where he lived; big regret never getting to see him during time I lived there. Sadly lived a troubled life; died of suicide in 1994.

If not number 1 therefore don’t “get it”?

I think bowie was too euro for a lot of the US. He was really big in canada and i the serious moonlight tour and the Toronto show was great. Likely the best concert i have seen.

He’s probably my favorite musician just because he was willing to be weird.

I mean, that’s a bit much.
I think most people have heard and recognize Spaxd Oddity. Which I recently learned Ed was intentionally meant t to parody how shitty the British space program was. The idea being if the British sent someone to space, it’d be a huge disaster

Did Europe embrace CCR, Beach Boys or Sublime like America did? Sometimes it’s just subtle cultural differences.
Bowie has sold millions of records here. Hard to say Americans didn’t “get” him.

Nice. The Monkees were also awesome in their own right but Davy Jones was British...
