Why aren't the Carpenters considered Seventies pop icons?

they had an impressive string of hits and a distinctive sound. Now mostly forgotten compared to some of the other artists of that era.

Because they sucked. I don't know what their music was but i wouldn't qualify it as pop. Maybe adult contemporary dreck or something.

They most definitely helped define the sound of the 70s. Karen Carpenter's voice is as good as it gets.

Because their music is fit for elevators, department stores and tampon commercials.

The girl had a decent voice but her brother gave off a weird pedo vibe.

I thought they were. They had their unique style like ABBA and John Denver had there own style.

She did not need auto tune.

With the Carpenters you have to evaluate it for what it is: lush, lightweight pop. Cotton candy.

Karen's voice though is unique in pop history. I can't think of another like it. Absolutely pure.

The mother was apparently a malignant narcissist and the father emotionally unavailable. The brother is apparently a raging a-hole who couldn't get over the fact that his sister was more talented. It's notable he's never had much of a career since she died. There were rumors of incest, but who knows. It's clear the whole family was abusive toward Karen, who subsumed it into an eating disorder that ultimately took her life.

If she'd have eaten Mama Cass' sandwich they'd both still be alive.
