Let’s say it’s the year 2200 and you’re walking around asking random people if they have heard of ________?

What five musicians whose peak fame was in the 20th century do you think they would most likely recognize?

I think Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and the Beatles are easily the three most recognizable musical acts of the 20th century. I would go with those three for mine. Not sure about the other two.

As far as composers go, Antonio Carlos Jobim should be. He has written a ton of songs that have become Jazz/Bossa Nova standards. The Girl From Ipanema is one of the most played songs of all time.

In all likelihood, none of them. Just 40 years after their formation, I see the public profile and relevancy of my favorite band, Metallica, eroding at a steady pace. It’s not far fetched to think that by 2200, no one will remember them, and they’ve sold tons of records. Hell, Billie Eilish works in music and never heard of Eddie Van Halen. Even The Beatles will fade in time, as wild as that sounds, today.

Elvis died 45 years ago and there’s a movie in theaters right now about his life. There are still Elvis impersonators out there. Graceland is not Disneyland but gets a lot of visitors.

Everyone in every part of human history (even the Napoleon and George Washington types) will fade eventually. Time just slowly devours everything. However, I think it will be an awfully long time before the American population forgets Elvis.

This is an interesting question because for the first time in our history, we have the ability record, store and reply the music of "the greats" and not just their compositions.

As long as the good music still exists then it will never truly fade away. I look up hundreds of reaction videos on YouTube with famous artists dead and alive. Some of them are still very popular to a younger audience that never heard of them.

you said this as a joke but are you really so naïve as to think that nobody past 2000 fits in this category?

He’s been the most successful and influential artist of the last 20 years. 6 of his 11 albums are currently in the top 100, 18 years after release. He will be listened to for a very long time.

To answer OP’s question:

Beatles
Michael Jackson
Johnny Cash
Nirvana
Kanye West

Also probably not all the way past 2200 but Phil Collins/Genesis will still be listened to for a long time.

Maybe Rihanna

Curious why you would take some of these over Elvis.
