Kanye WAS probably the biggest musical act of the 2010s, and was #1 into the 2020s.

Who do you think is the new #1?

For me, I am leaning towards MGK.

This guy is so versatile, going from a lyrical assassin as a rapper to now single handedly reviving the emo/pop-punk scene of the early 2000s.

Even Travis Barker (a pioneer of that genre) approves of MGK's new musical style.

The guy is uber-talented as an emerging superstar!

Even the starlette Megan Fox digs MGK's swagger!

Who would you say is, or could, replace Kanye's place?

I respectfully disagree.

That honor has to go to Taylor Swift, right?

Machine Gun Kelly's not even in the conversation, in my view.

I am going to have to strongly disagree with all of this.

Following this thread so I'll know who to avoid like the plague. Seriously, there are so many great bands and artists out there that don't give a shite about all that overblown crap.

Today's music sucks. Nothing will ever compare to the 60s. So many great historic rock bands. I can't even think of a great rock band these days outside of the Foo Fighters. I'm also writing this after binging multiple Doors concerts and documentaries for the past 5 hrs. I wasn't born in the 60's but that music speaks to me. The Doors, Beatles, Buffalo Soringfield, War, Chicago, CSNY, Joplin, Hendrix, Stones etc. etc ..... There will never be a period of music like that.

Foo Fighter are not a great rock band. Sure Dave Grohl is a nice guy but please. Great? Spoon, Angel Olsen, Big Thief, Ryan Adams, The Smile, Ty Segall, Bill Callahan, The Arcs, Amyl and The Sniffers, Andrew Bird, Kevin Morby, The Black Keys, and King Gizzard all put out good albums this year. Well, King Gizzard probably put out about 8 this year. Then you have old favs Ozzy, Megadeath, Pixies, Tears For Fears, Built To Spill. All is not lost but you have to wade through the crap to find it (crap being Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande etc.).

I dunno, I think they're great. I love a lot of their songs.

Possibly an unpopular opinion here, but I prefer the Foo Fighters to Nirvana.

I think you’re confusing “great rock band” with “put out a great album.” Those things are not equal.

Also, regardless of whether I like the Foo Fighters or agree that they are the premiere musical act of the 21st century, they’ve probably sold more albums than all of the artists you listed combined. They have been a staple on rock and alt rock channels for 25 years and consistently play to sold out arenas and festivals. I think the black keys are the only artist on your list that comes close.

Does popularity equal greatness? No, but it’s a far better indicator than anything listed in your post.

I feel that Nirvana's music is more in-line with that era in music (Grunge) and while it will always have fans the music didn't really span generations. You either grew up with it and liked it, or didn't and probably don't care about it one way or another. I should also note that you hear more songs today from Pearl Jam's Ten album than you hear from Nirvana (or at least that I've observed).

I think Foo Fighters have a much broader collection of songs, and several have become truly iconic. Plus I'd wager that Foo Fighters have probably inspired more future musicians than Nirvana ever did (though if Nirvana would have evolved if Kurt Cobain had not committed suicide is a potential debate)

Taylor Swift or Drake if we are talking about sales and who moves the needle.

Good point.

Perhaps why I'm not crazy about Nirvana is that I didn't grow up in that era (it was a little before my time) nor am I a depressed, angst-ridden teenager.

Cobain's death kind of trapped that band in time and it never had a chance to produce a more mature, evolved style of music.
